LSU students in the School of Social Work received a first-hand account of what it is like for a young person dealing with loss as NFL star, Warrick Dunn brought his newest charitable venture, Betty’s Hope, to campus on Wednesday, Oct. 24. Betty’s Hope, a charitable venture by NFL star and Baton Rouge native Warrick Dunn, will offer peer-group based grief support; community advocacy and awareness; parent/caregiver support; education and resources; and community support and training at elementary, middle and high schools in Baton Rouge. The new Barnes & Noble at LSU bookstore opened on Monday, Oct. 22, and is located in the new LSU Union Square development on Highland Road. The grand opening ribbon-cutting celebration will take place on Friday, Nov. 2, at 11 a.m.
The new Barnes & Noble at LSU bookstore will make it possible to schedule author book signings and other kinds of programming, making the bookstore a central gathering place for both the campus and the surrounding Baton Rouge community. In addition to the usual items at Barnes & Noble retail outlets, the Barnes & Noble at LSU will offer textbooks, course materials, apparel and other items. A café serving Starbucks products will also be housed in the store, as well as a Clinique cosmetics counter and Computer Tech store. On Oct. 25, LSU hosted the final in a series of six Presidential Election Forums, which focused specifically on social issues, in the Rotunda of the Business Education Complex.
During the series of six Presidential Election Forums, students, faculty and staff joined in on the conversation by using the hashtag #LSUvotes on Twitter. The Office of Strategic Initiatives hosted the fourth annual LSU Undergraduate Research Conference - Excite/Explore/Experiment - on Friday, Oct. 26, in the Union Cotillion Ballroom. The LSU Undergraduate Research Conference is an annual conference to promote undergraduate research at universities and community colleges. The agenda included an oral & poster presentation competition and a keynote presentation by Graham Walker from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
A special Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle was at LSU in the parking lot next to Patrick F. Taylor Hall on Monday, Oct. 22, providing a rare opportunity to experience a vehicle that derives all of its energy from hydrogen. The Office of Parking, Traffic and Transportation and Student Government recently held its annual bike auction using bikes abandoned on campus. The LSU Police Department recovers many bicycles and often these bicycles are not registered and there is no way to identify the owner. Register your bicycle with LSU PD. Mike the Tiger visited with people who attended the annual Bike Auction sponsored by the Office of Parking, Traffic and Transportation and Student Government.
