LSU alumnus and Baton Rouge native Keith Comeaux, who served as test conductor, team chief and flight director for Curiosity’s launch, eight-month flight and landing on the Red Planet, spoke with students during his recent visit to campus. On Aug. 5, LSU alumnus Keith Comeaux led a team of NASA scientists through a successful rover landing on Mars. Throughout its lifespan, Curiosity will use its mobile laboratory to help us learn more about the landscape of the red planet. LSU's new high performance computing cluster, SuperMike-II, named after LSU's original large Linux cluster named SuperMike that was launched in 2002, is 10 times faster than its immediate predecessor, Tezpur.
On Wednesday, Oct. 17, LSU officially broke ground on the new Tiger Stadium South end zone expansion project. Funded by the Tiger Athletic Foundation, the new addition will include suite, club and upper deck seating and increase the stadium's capacity to 99,500, the seventh-largest on-campus stadium in the nation. LSU's facility services personnel work to replace bulbs in the security lights near the UREC. To help keep campus safe and illuminated, LSU is upgrading illumination in current outdoor lighting fixtures, installing additional outdoor lighting fixtures around campus, and improving visibility by pruning trees and shrubs. Facility Services personnel routinely perform patrols and repairs throughout campus to remain proactive in lighting safety. If you notice poorly lit areas, broken lights, or overgrown landscaping, please report these concerns to Facility Services at 578-3186 or by email at workcon@lsu.edu.
LSU students enjoy the fall weather as they walk through the Memorial Oak Grove. The Memorial Oak Grove, just south of the Student Union, was dedicated in 1926 and includes 30 trees dedicated to a fallen soldier who gave his life in service to the United States and includes one representing the unknown soldiers missing in action. Clouds float high above the Memorial Tower early in the morning. A view of a couple of buildings on campus from the ground up.
