This Week in Pictures | 07/14/2012 - 07/20/2012

As part of the LSYOU residential summer program, LSU environmental sciences professor Crystal Johnson gave a presentation on "Zombie Cooties," which used the popular movie monsters to explain the spread of pathogens and how an epidemic can develop. The LSYOU program is one of many opportunities for LSU faculty and students to learn by serving their community, particularly a place where students from the College of Human Science & Education can learn effective teaching techniques. LSU engineering science Ph.D. student Monique Johnson introduced students participating in the LSYOU summer program to AutoCAD, software used by architects and engineers to design, draft and model, while exposing them to the STEM - science, technology, engineering and math - disciplines.
Louisiana State Youth Opportunities Unlimited, or LSYOU, is a non-profit program that operates under the LSU College of Human Sciences & Education that helps at-risk students in high school by providing them with the tools and support they need to succeed. James Clem recently won a Nook for participating in a survey conducted by PPRL for the Research Communications Department. PPRL Operations Manager Michael Climek and LSU Bookstore Manager Lance Kisamore presented Clem with the Nook Simple Touch, which was donated by the LSU Bookstore. The roughly 1,200 oak trees on LSU's campus are as much a part of the university as its students, faculty, staff and historic buildings. There are hundreds of opportunities to endow these trees through the LSU Foundation's "Endow an Oak" program. One of the beautiful pink crepe myrtles on LSU's campus during the summer.
