LSU Chancellor Michael Martin presided over LSU’s 277th commencement main ceremony on Friday, May 18, as 3,827 students received degrees - 2,911 bachelor’s, 716  master’s, five education specialist certificates, 106 Ph.D.s; seven Doctor of Musical Arts; and 82 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees. Director General of the Foreign Service and Director of Human Resources Linda Thomas-Greenfield, an LSU alumna and a member of the Career Foreign Service, delivered the commencement address at LSU’s 277th commencement exercises on Friday, May 18. Jin Hin Yap, who earned his Doctor of Musical Arts at LSU’s 277th commencement exercises on Friday, May 18, sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” and the LSU alma mater.
Forty-two LSU seniors received University Medals for graduating with the highest undergraduate grade-point averages. They were honored at a special ceremony held on Thursday, May 17, and recognized again during LSU’s 277th commencement exercises. LSU awarded a doctor of humane letters degree to Sean Reilly during the Spring Commencement ceremony. Reilly, the chief executive officer of the Lamar Advertising Company, is a former state representative from Baton Rouge. LSU awarded a doctor of humane letters degree to Mary Lou Applewhite during the Spring Commencement ceremony. Applewhite, an LSU alumna, was one of the first women to pursue a medical career in Louisiana during the 1950s.
Russel L. Honoré, a retired lieutenant general and 33rd commanding general of the U.S. First Army at Fort Gillem, Ga., was the keynote speaker for E. J. Ourso College of Business Diploma Ceremony. Following Hurricane Katrina’s destruction of the Gulf Coast in 2005, Russel L. Honoré led the Joint Task Force Katrina and commanded all active-duty troops from all military branches for the storm recovery operations. After 37 years of active service in the U.S. Army, Honoré retired in 2008. LSU Chancellor Michael Martin recognized the LSU class of 1962 and the Golden Tigers, or those who graduated at least 50 years ago, including a 99-year old alumna (pictured above) who attended the ceremony.
Oscar Richard, one of LSU's Golden Tigers, is a former director of public relations at the university. The 91-year-old Richard is also member of Lod Cook's "21 Club," signifying the year he was born. A new LSU graduate wears the traditional African Kente stole in LSU colors signifying the completion of his academic career. The stoles were presented during the LSU African-American Cultural Center’s 16th annual Robing Ceremony on Thursday, May 17. The May 2012 graduating class represents 60 Louisiana parishes, 45 U.S. states and 58 foreign countries. Fifty-five percent of the graduates were women and 45 percent were men. The oldest graduate is 72, and four graduates were the youngest at 20.
Graduates from the E. J. Ourso College of Business celebrate during the college's diploma ceremony at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The LSU and Southern ROTC programs held the rehearsal for LSU's Spring Commissioning Ceremony on Wednesday, May 16. At the ceremony, held on Thursday in the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes, 20 ROTC cadets were commissioned into the Army, Air Force and Navy. The sun sets over Alex Box Stadium for the Tigers' last regular season home game against Nicholls State on Tuesday, May 15. The SEC Western Division Champions are still in the hunt for the SEC regular season championship.
