Students walk through the Quad during the first week of classes, as the spring semester officially began on Tuesday, Jan. 17. LSU students pass in front of Thomas Boyd Hall, which was built in 1924 and named for one of LSU's former students who went on to become president of the university. The LSU Greek Theatre was built in the 1920s and seats approximately 3,500. Today it is used for outdoor events and as a quiet place to study.
LSU's distinctive Italian-inspired stucco buildings feature many archways. The Magnolia liliiflora, commonly known as a Japanese magnolia, is much smaller than most other magnolia species, growing to only about 12 feet tall. Although sometimes referred to as a Japanese magnolia because it was introduced to English-speaking countries from Japan, the Magnolia liliiflora is actually native to southwest China.
