On Tuesday, Aug. 9, LSU conducted a safety drill consisting of a full-scale exercise for a residence hall fire emergency at Herget Hall. This fire drill exercise allowed for a realistic response by all affected public safety agencies, LSU departments, and governmental and non-governmental agencies. During the drill, all agencies were activated as they would be during a real emergency. The fire drill exercise began after the LSU Fire and Emergency Training Institute initiated simulated smoke on two floors of Herget Hall. A fire alarm was pulled just after 8 a.m., and all emergency response operations followed.
The LSU Emergency Operations Center, or EOC, was activated during Tuesday's fire drill exercise. The EOC is housed in the LSU Public Safety building and is staffed by personnel from around campus who oversee the university's response to various crises. Staff at the LSU Office of Communications & University Relations set up a call center in the University Relations conference room. The LSU EOC activated the call center as part of Tuesday's fire drill exercise. Hector Rios, LSU Information Technology Services’ network design manager, delivered the "State of the Network" tech talk on Thursday, Aug. 11.
LSU First Year Experience annually holds STRIPES, or Student Tigers Rallying, Interacting and Promoting Education and Service, to show incoming students what it really means to be an LSU Tiger. The 2011 STRIPES sessions saw a record number of incoming students participate, with more than 100 more students attending than last year. Key components of the STRIPES program include academic success, college readiness, history and traditions, involvement, leadership development, relationship building and student services.
In its 12th summer, STRIPES is a four-day, three-night retreat designed to prepare incoming students for the transition to LSU. STRIPES participants are placed into two streaks – purple and gold. The streaks are designed to help the students to create bonds and enhance teamwork strategies for STRIPES activities. During STRIPES, current LSU students help educate the incoming students about the history and traditions of LSU; ease the transition from high school to college; familiarize participants with university resources, facilities and programs; and facilitate the establishment of a strong bond with the university.
