LSU held its 275th commencement ceremony on Friday, Aug. 5, in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center and 772 students received degrees. Of the 772 graduates, 265 earned master’s degrees and 97 received doctorate degrees. LSU Chancellor Michael V. Martin presided over LSU’s 275th commencement ceremony. The August 2011 graduating class represented 50 Louisiana parishes, 38 U.S. states and 33 foreign countries. Louisiana State Sen. Ben Nevers delivered the commencement address at LSU’s 275th commencement exercises. Nevers, a lifetime resident of Bogalusa, serves as the chairman of the Senate Education Committee and has shepherded numerous pieces of legislation promoting postsecondary education.
The commencement procession at LSU is led by a mace bearer who is a distinguished member of the faculty. The mace bearer for summer commencement was Kevin L. Cope, president of the LSU Faculty Senate and professor in the Department of English. Meredith Caitlin Pugh of Baton Rouge was recognized as the sole University Medalist for achieving the highest undergraduate grade-point average in the class. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in biological science from the LSU College of Science. Ninety-seven summer commencement graduates earned doctoral degrees and received their new hoods. At LSU, hoods are lined with purple and gold, while the dark blue velvet binding represents a Doctor of Philosophy degree.
Of the 772 summer commencement graduates, women made up 49.09 percent of the graduating class and men made up 50.91 percent. The oldest graduate was 76 and two graduates were the youngest at 20. During the ceremony, the “Star-Spangled Banner” and LSU alma mater were performed by Amy Parker, doctoral student in the LSU College of Music & Dramatic Arts, and the processional and recessional music was performed by the Norem Brass Quintet. One of LSU's 97 new doctoral degree recipients receives his hood during the commencement ceremony.
Congratulations to all 772 new LSU alumni! Eliana Arvelo, an alumna of the LSU Center for Internal Auditing and the LSU Flores MBA Program, became the university's 18th recipient of the Institute of Internal Auditors’ Student Highest Achievement Award.
