That morning, the U.S. flag that flies over the Parade Ground was found burned. A new U.S. flag was raised that evening. On Thursday, a suspect turned himself in to LSU Police. Gerald Kennedy, The William A. Read Professor of English Literature at LSU, was recently named a Boyd Professor, the university's highest honor. Kennedy is regarded as one of the foremost scholars of 19th- and 20th-century American short fiction. Gerald Kennedy is teased by his colleagues at a recent reception honoring his new position as Boyd Professor.
Michael Bromwich, director of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement, or BOEMRE, addressed LSU faculty on May 2. He also met with students and other members of the LSU community to give details about new employment opportunities offered through the bureau. The LSU College of Engineering Department of Mechanical Engineering hosted the ME 4202 Capstone Design II annual project exhibition on May 5 in the Patrick F. Taylor Courtyard. Projects included the Mobile Marksman, which assists quadriplegic hunters in their sport.

Projects included a Hydraulics Training Simulator, which was designed and built as a training rig to teach mill mechanics how to troubleshoot malfunctioned parts of a hydraulics machine. For many mechanical engineering seniors, the pinnacle of their undergraduate curriculum is the Capstone Senior Design project. Construction continues on the Choppin Hall Annex, set to be completed in 2012. The new annex will add 63 percent expansion of laboratory space to the current facility and house part of the Chemistry Department, the materials science initiative and a consolidated clean room facility.

Representatives from LSU's student chapter of the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers, or NOBCChE, were on hand to answer questions and guide visiting spouses of current Louisiana legislators through simple and fun chemistry experiments.
