LSU junior Mytrang Do (right) of Baton Rouge was awarded a prestigious, nationally competitive Goldwater Scholarship by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program, and LSU junior Winston Capps (left) of Slidell received Honorable Mention honors. The LSU Alumni Association’s 2011 Hall of Distinction induction class includes (from left to right): W. Henson Moore, Alumnus of the Year; Jeffrey Carbo; Art Favre; Graham Breedlove, Young Alumnus of the Year; Dr. Julian Bailes; Gerald “Jerry” George; and Robert “Mac” Wallace. A ceremony was held on Thursday, April 14, to announce the renaming of the College of Agriculture Administration Building to Martin D. Woodin Hall. Woodin is a former LSU System president and executive vice president.
Many of Woodin’s relatives –as well as LSU administrators, faculty and staff – attended Thursday’s ceremony at the entrance of Woodin Hall in the quadrangle. Speakers during Thursday’s ceremony, including current LSU System President John Lombardi, spoke highly of Woodin, who served as system president from 1972 to 1985. A native of Sicily Island, Woodin passed away in 2006. Dudley Fricke, who served as Woodin’s assistant during his tenure at LSU, cuts the ribbon Tuesday to officially christen Martin D. Woodin Hall. Prior to the ribbon cutting, Fricke shared with those at the ceremony his memories of Woodin.
The LSU Honors College was recognized during the April 13 Baton Rouge Metropolitan Council meeting for the college’s Spring Service Project. Honors College student Stewart Humble, biology major in the College of Science and a native of Egan, spoke during behalf of the student volunteers. At the presentation were (from left to right) Derrick Johnson, LSU Facility Services; Blaine Grimes, Campus Federal Credit Union; Cindy Seghers, experiential learning coordinator, LSU Honors College; Councilwoman Tara Wicker; LSU Honors College Dean Nancy Clark; and student Stewart Humble. Members of the panel - (from left to right) Robert Mann, Rachel Emanuel, A.P. Tureaud Jr., D'Army Bailey and Keith Finley - discuss "A More Noble Cause: A.P. Tureaud and the Struggle for Civil Rights in Louisiana" on Tuesday, April 12, in the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes.
The large crowd that turned out to listen to the panel discussion included LSU students, faculty and staff, and also many members of A.P. Tureaud Sr.'s family. Chancellor Michael Martin speaks Tuesday during a press conference at the LSU Museum of Art to announce the upcoming Swine Palace production, "HEIST!" Performances of the interactive crime caper will take place May 4-8 throughout the Shaw Center for the Arts in downtown Baton Rouge. Swine Palace Artistic Director George Judy said that "HEIST!" is a collaboration between Swine Palace, the LSU Museum of Art and the LSU School of Art. Those taking part in the production's run include Chancellor Michael Martin, Head Football Coach Les Miles and East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Kip Holden.
"HEIST!" creator Deborah Stein, left, and Actors Theatre of Louisville (Ky.) Artistic Director Sean Daniels, speak about the production during Tuesday's press conference. Daniels directed the "HEIST!" world premiere at the 2010 Humana Festival of New American Plays.  The Employee Appreciation Breakfast Reception was held on Tuesday, April 12 from 7:30 a.m. until 9 a.m. in the LSU Student Union Royal Cotillion Ballroom.
Chancellor Mike Martin hosted the annual Employee Appreciation Breakfast Reception for faculty and staff in appreciation of their hard work and dedication to LSU.
