The Chancellor’s Distinguished Lectureship Series hosted Nobel Laureate Eric Cornell on Thursday, Dec. 2, in the Royal Cotillion Ballroom of the LSU Student Union. Eric Cornell is one of the youngest recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physics. In 1995 he developed the experimental realization of the Bose-Einstein condensate, which was predicted by Satyendra Nath Bose and Albert Einstein in 1924. Eric Cornell's lecture on “Which Does Nature Like Better, Lazy or Sloppy?” focused on some of the mysteries of quantum physics. The Chancellor’s Distinguished Lectureship Series is an ongoing series bringing internationally renowned scholars to Baton Rouge to engage LSU’s faculty, students and staff.
LSU honored the holiday season with its annual Candlelight Celebration on Tuesday, Nov. 30. Performances were held in the the Claude L. Shaver Theatre in the Music & Dramatic Arts Building, and LSU's Christmas tree was lit immediately following the program in front of the Memorial Tower. Those in attendance for the annual Candlelight Celebration enjoyed performances by various groups, including the LSU Gospel Choir, in the Claude L. Shaver Theatre in the Music & Dramatic Arts Building. LSU honored the holiday traditions of Christmas, Kwanzaa and Hanukkah during the Candlelight Celebration. Members of Hillel at LSU lit a menorah as part of the celebration of Hanukkah.
After many years being held on the steps of the Memorial Tower, the Candlelight Celebration was moved to the Shaver Theatre, letting patrons enjoy the performances away from the bitter cold outside. Following the Candlelight Celebration performances, members of the LSU Ambassadors led those in attendance across the street to the Memorial Tower to see the lighting of LSU's Christmas tree. The LSU Christmas tree was purchased from Windy Hills Farm in Ethel, La., by donations from Candlelight Celebration sponsors. The 30-foot tree is decorated with lights recycled from previous Candlelight Celebrations, including energy-efficient LED lights.
