Hundreds of students and other representatives from many of Louisiana’s public universities participated in the Rally for Higher Education on Wednesday, Nov. 10, at the State Capitol Building. Chants such as “1, 2, 3, 4 … Don’t cut our budgets anymore!” and “Educate! Save our state!” and “They say cut back, we say fight back!” could be heard around the Capitol. Speakers from Louisiana’s public universities and higher education support groups talked to the crowd about the budget situations for higher education. Although speakers hailed from universities across the state, some common themes were mentioned repeatedly, mainly that Louisiana’s public universities were united in this cause and that people need to stand up for higher education in the state. The Rally for Higher Education was sponsored by the joint coalition Education NOW!, the Save UNO Coalition, Save LSU, Save SELU, Proud Students at LSU, Links for Literacy at ULL, Stand Up! at Nicholls State and LSUnited, among others. The groups stressed that this is not the last rally they will hold to bring attention to the budget crisis facing Louisiana higher education.
