Undergraduate Research

Students will participate in hands-on research experience under the guidance of some of the most accomplished faculty in the United States and produce an end product of their work in the form of a conference presentation, publication submission, patent application or other practical product of their work.

Pre-research Experience 

In the spring semester, students will attend a series of workshops that will prepare them for the undergraduate research internship, Students will be required to prepare a proposal requesting funding for the research internship.Upon satisfactory completion of pre-research requirements, students are eligible to participate in the research internship.
 

Research Internship

Students will participate in hands-on research experience under the guidance of some of the most accomplished faculty in the United States and produce an end product of their work in the form of a conference presentation, publication submission, patent application or other practical product of their work.
 

Duration

The research internship should be considered a long term experience. Students begin their research experience in the summer before their junior year. The expectation is for a student to research for at least one academic year; which may or may not include research during the summer.

 

Expectations

  • Students are expected to spend at least one academic year working on their research project
  • Documentation of research activities will be provided in the form of monthly research reports, regular follow up on the final outcome project, and a final product of research approved by a research mentor
  • Students should work on their research at least 6 hours per week during the academic year and 20 hours per week during the summer
  • The McNair Scholars staff will remain in communication with the faculty mentor to follow the progress of our students
  • Continued research funding will depend on the students demonstrated commitment to the project
  • Students are expected to challenge themselves and produce a final project that is of the highest quality
  • The results of the research will be shared with the public through presentations, internal publication and external publications
 

Funding

The McNair Program will provide up to one year of funding for each student. The program will assist students in identifying and applying for other sources of funding for research experiences beyond the first-year. 
  • Fall Semester— $800 Stipend; Spring Semester— $800 Stipend
  • Summer Term— $1200, On-campus apartment, Meal plan
    • The McNair Program will assist each student in finding additional sources of funding
    • Funding is provided in the form of a stipend, which is considered additional financial aid and may effect your current aid.
    • To receive the stipend you must maintain a 3.0 GPA for the semester and be a full-time student.
      Funding is contingent upon acceptable progress throughout the research internship.
