Due to the expected effects of Hurricane Rita on the LSU campus, all classes and operations at the university will be cancelled on Monday, Sept. 26. The class make-up date will be Thursday, Oct. 6.

In addition, LSU had been notified by state emergency officials to expect the arrival of special-needs evacuees at the Maddox Fieldhouse. Contingency operations are also under way to begin resumption of acute-care activity in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

It is expected that storm-related damage to campus could be comparable to Hurricane Katrina. Consequently, LSU Facility Services estimates that it will need approximately two days to remove fallen trees, clean up debris, restore any power outages and repair damage to structures and roadways. National Weather Service forecasts predict that the most storm-intense activity will end in the Baton Rouge area by Sunday morning, enabling Facility Services to begin the clean-up and restoration of campus to safe and operational status starting Sunday afternoon.

To facilitate this process and to provide expedited restoration of the LSU campus, classes and operations will be cancelled on Monday. Essential employees are reminded that they are required to report for work as usual on Monday, and should contact their immediate supervisors for possible assignment this weekend. Facility Services will require that the campus streets and parking lots remain clear on Sunday and Monday to ease the clean-up process. Campus police will restrict parking until mid-afternoon on Monday. Members of the LSU community who wish to assist with this clean-up effort may volunteer by calling Facility Services at 225-578-3186.

The LSU Union will close at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23, and remain closed until Sunday, Sept. 25. The Student Health Center will maintain regular hours on Saturday, will be open for emergencies only on Sunday and resume normal hours starting Monday. The Pentagon and Highland Dining Halls will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. during the weekend. Various dining options will be available at the Union on Sunday and Monday. The Recreational Center will remain open throughout the weekend and next week. Campus transit services will not run Friday and Saturday due to the storm.
