The Southern Review Announces 3rd Annual Literary Award Winners

(Baton Rouge, LA, February 2008) In 2005, The Southern Review established three new literary awards honoring the literary figures who played defining roles in the journal’s history. These awards—The Eudora Welty Prize in Fiction, The Cleanth Brooks Prize in Nonfiction, and The Robert Penn Warren Prize in Poetry—are given annually to the best short story, best work of nonfiction, and best poem or group of poems published in The Southern Review during the previous volume year.
The winners for 2007 include the short story “Buying Lenin” by Miroslav Penkov, the essay “Istanbul in Winter” by Richard Tillinghast, and the poem “The Assistant” by Gilbert Allen. These pieces were selected from works appearing in volume 43 of The Southern Review. The journal’s staff nominated their favorites in each genre, and outside judges made the final decisions. The winning selections were chosen by novelist Victoria Redel, nonfiction scholar Robin C. Hemley, and poet Mark Jarman, respectively. Each author will receive a $1500 honorarium, funded by Friends of The Southern Review.
