We seek to publish the very best new fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and literary essays by established and emerging writers. All manuscripts are given full consideration.
Only previously unpublished work will be considered. Please read the following submission guidelines carefully.
WHEN—We read submissions postmarked September 1 through March 1. All manuscripts postmarked outside our reading period will be recycled.
WHAT—Please submit only one manuscript in any genre at a time, and no more than twice per reading period.
Fiction & Nonfiction: We rarely publish work that is longer than 8,000 words. We consider novel excerpts if they stand alone.
Poetry: Please submit no more than five poems at one time.
HOW—We do not accept electronic submissions. Use regular post and include an SASE for our response. On your manuscript or cover letter, list your e-mail address and telephone number. Please wait until you’ve heard from us regarding a submission before submitting additional work. We normally respond within four to six months.

PAYMENT/TERMS—The Southern Review pays $25 per printed page with a maximum payment of $200 for prose and $125 for poetry, plus two copies of the issue in which the work appears and a one year subscription to The Southern Review.
