The
Robert Penn Warren Prize in Poetry
given
to the best poem or group of poems published in The Southern
Review each volume year
With
awarding a poetry prize in the name of one of the founding editors
of the journal, The Southern Review recognizes the extraordinary
contributions Mr. Warren made to the world of poetry throughout
his long life in words. Winner of a Pulitzer Prize for poetry (1959)
and another one for fiction (1947), he was also the recipient of
the Bollingen Prize in Poetry, the National Medal for Literature,
and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, to list only a smattering
of his honors. In 1986, he was named the first Poet Laureate of
the United States.
