GameDay Recycling Challenge

The GameDay Recycling Challenge is a nationwide competition among universities to reduce and recycle the waste generated at home football games. During each competition cycle, participating schools report recycling, compost and attendance data for at least one home football game. The challenge is administered by the College and University Recycling Coalition (CURC), RecycleMania, Keep America Beautiful and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WasteWise.

In 2016, for the second year in a row, LSU won first place in the nation in the category of most tons recycled for any football game.  We entered the LSU vs. Arkansas football game and recycled over 40 tons of waste from the game!

Some of our strategies for winning this competition include an aggressive marketing campaign called "Get Caught Green Handed", to encourage tailgaters, students and game-goers to recycle.  A football signed by the Head Coach is awarded to whoever submits the best recycling selfie before, during or after the game!

We also ask for volunteers to help clean up after the game, including the day after.  If you are interested in volunteering for the 2016 GameDay Recycling Challenge (Nov. 5, vs. Alabama), please email sustainability@lsu.edu.
