Seth Newsome: Student Veteran & LSU Football Defensive End
LSU Veteran & Military Student Services (VMSS) is dedicated to helping veterans, service members, dependents, and survivors succeed in higher education and in seeking employment. One of these veterans is Seth Newsome, LSU defensive end, and junior. Newsome helps to prepare the offensive line for game days by recreating techniques gathered from other schools.
Newsome, from Fredericksburg, VA, served in the United States Marine. Newsome comes from a family where the US Marine Corps has played a big part in their lives. His father, brothers and youngest sister have also served and continue to serve in the US Marine Corps.
Upon the conclusion of his service, Newsome reached out to LSU looking for a place to further his education. He believes the LSU Veteran & Military Student Services was instrumental in helping his transition into higher education.
“You’re kinda lost when you get out of the military. But finding the Veteran’s center-you know- it’s refreshing. It’s just a good feeling.” said Newsome. The LSU VMSS features a Veterans Resource Center that includes a study lounge, group meeting area, and a computer lab where veteran students like Newsome can study and connect.
Once many veterans conclude their military service, like Newsome, they discover that they miss the camaraderie of the military environment. Newsome was able to find this in the Veteran’s Center and on the football team.
The Veteran’s Center strives to meet all of the needs of the students it serves including offering free meals where students like Newsome can eat when they are hungry, and chat with other veterans. Newsome says the Veteran’s Center is a “safe space where he can talk about anything and be surrounded by people who understand where he comes from.”
The LSU VMSS Center strives to foster a community of support at LSU for veterans and their families.
They are eager to assist you in achieving personal and professional goals, exploring new learning experiences, and getting involved on campus. Their main goals include helping you start on the right path, make the transition to college, and earn a degree.
