What is the LSU Master Plan (Microsoft Word file) [View]

The LSU Master Plan is Louisiana State University's method of dealing with traffic and creating a pedestrian campus. The plan will serve as a guide future parking, cycling, pedestrian safety, and other issues. Not only does the plan place nearly all of the traffic burden on one neighborhood, it also attempts to continue the practice of dealing with parking by simply building more parking spaces.

Proportional Representation and Instant Runoff Voting (Microsoft Word file) [View]

Instant runoff voting is a winner-take-all system that ensures that a winning candidate will receive a majority of votes rather than a simple plurality. In plurality voting -- as used in most U.S. elections -- candidates can win with less than a majority when there are more than two candidates running for the office. In contrast, IRV elects a majority candidate while still allowing voters to support a candidate who is not a front-runner. IRV is a sensible method in single winner elections.

Throughout the world, sweatshops operate where workers are the least able to organize themselves to defend their rights, where wages and benefits are lowest, and where government is willing to levy the least taxes and surrender the most sovereignty to multinational corporations. LSU and the global network of sweatshops share an intimate and very profitable relationship.

Greenwashing: Corporate Sponsorship of Baton Rouge Earth Day (Microsoft Word file) [View]

In Louisiana, where the chemical industry faces opposition from environmental, community, and regulatory groups, the desire to be identified with positive images of the environment is strong. Baton Rouge Earth Day, one of the largest Earth Days in the United States and located in a politically influential community, is a natural target for corporate efforts to harness the environmental movement for their own purposes.

Tax Justice: Better Funding of Higher Education Through Progressive Tax Reform (Microsoft Word file) [View]

The Louisiana State Legislature is heading into fiscal session on April 29th. Some $600 million in "temporary" taxes are up for renewal. If they are not renewed, massive cuts in higher education and health care will result. Even if they are renewed, the Department of Health and Human Services is facing over $300 million in cuts.1 Under the Louisiana Constitution, state spending is protected in all but two areas; higher education and health care. These programs, so vital for our state's well being, are always the first to go in a fiscal crunch. Our state's tax policies reduce the quality of education students receive at LSU and other state universities.
