
EDITOR
Responsible for all facets of newspaper production and editorial content; has final authority on content, layout, photography, artwork and production for news, sports, entertainment and editorial sections; exercises final authority over dismissal and suspension of all staff members; works with adviser and Student Media staff to monitor budget and handle payroll approvals; establishes training sessions as needed to help staff improve quality of work. The editor is hired by the Media Board, a public committee made up of staff, faculty and professionals. Media Board meets near the end of each semester to choose the editor. The editor then hires the rest of the staff.
MANAGING EDITOR
In following the editor in chain of command, is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the paper, including supervising the news, sports, entertainment, photography, editorial, copy editing and design staffs; executes the policies of the editor and may help set policies for all sections; exercises authority in making on-the-spot decisions for all departments; acts as editor in chief in his or her absence.
ASSOCIATE MANAGING EDITOR
Acts in place of the editor and/or managing editor in their absence on production nights; when on duty, designs each dayÕs paper and supervise editorial production in laying it out; exercises authority over enforcing or extending writer and photographer deadlines; exercises authority over the news staff, copy editors and editorial production while on duty.
NEWS EDITOR
Directly supervises the news staff, including editing stories and coaching on writing techniques; sets policies for reporters with editorÕs approval; enforces deadline policies; works with editor and managing editor to formulate long term story planning ideas; holds weekly meetings with writers to assign stories; responsible for communicating any design, photo or graphic ideas to the editors of those sections.
CHIEF STAFF WRITER
Has same responsibilities as staff writer; serves in an advisory role for staff writers; responsible for being the best reporter on staff and for sharing skills and experience with other staff writers; exercises additional authority over the news staff as assigned by the editor.
STAFF WRITERS
Cover beats and breaking news; meet deadlines and minimum performance standards as set by editor.
CONTRIBUTING WRITERS
write news and feature stories as assigned by the news editor.
OPINION EDITOR
Works directly for the editor; designs and lays out the Opinion section each day; edits all content for Op-Ed pages, including letters to the editor; produces one opinion column each week; coordinates the editorial board to determine editorial opinions and write staff editorials.
COLUMNISTS
Produce opinion columns on schedule set by the opinion editor.
CARTOONIST/ILLUSTRATOR
Produces original cartoons on deadline as directed by the opinion editor. Sports editor Ð sets policy and supervise day-to-day operations of the sports section; exercises authority over the hiring and dismissal of sports staff; assigns sports stories and sets deadlines within the constraints of the production schedule of the paper; design sand copy edits the sports section.
SPORTS EDITOR

SPORTS WRITER
Can work as a staff writer or a contributing writer; under the supervision of the sports editor and assistant sports editor.
ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITOR
Covers sports beats and breaking news; meets deadlines and a minimum performance standard as set by the sports editor; assists sports editor with layout, design and copy editing of sports section.
PHOTO EDITOR
Covers photo assignments made by staff and entertainment writers; takes ÒwildÓ photos as news space requires; determines the schedule for the photography staff; prepares and sizes photographs as needed by the associate managing editor or section editors.
STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER
Covers photo assignments made by staff and entertainment writers; takes ÒwildÓ photos as news space requires.
STRINGER PHOTOGRAPHER
Same as staff photographer, but on an as-needed basis.
ASSISTANT PHOTO EDITOR
Has same responsibilities as photo editor but reports to the photo editor; assists the photo editor in prepping photos and handling assignments.
ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR
Sets policy and supervise operations of weekly entertainment section; exercises authority over the hiring and dismissal of entertainment staff; assigns section feature stories and sets deadlines within the constraints of the production schedule of the paper; designs and copy edits the entertainment section.
ENTERTAINMENT WRITER
Can work as a staff writer or a contributing writer; under the supervision of the entertainment editor.
ONLINE EDITOR
Maintains and updates The Reveille Web site as needed.
ONLINE ASSISTANT
Helps online editor as needed.
CHIEF COPY EDITOR
Has same responsibilities as copy editors; sets policy and supervise day-to-day operations of the copy editing staff; serves in an advisory role in the hiring and dismissal of the copy editing staff.
COPY EDITORS
Edit all news copy for grammar, errors, AP style, Reveille style, readability and accuracy; write headlines for all news stories and cutlines for all news and ÒwildÓ photographs; edit printed pages for errors as determined by the associate managing editor.
SPECIAL SECTIONS EDITOR
Works closely with the editorial and advertising advisers on all aspects of writing, editing, production and planning of special section; determines the style and general operating procedures for special sections; has final authority on all content, layout, photography, artwork and production for special sections.
GRAPHIC ARTIST
Creates news graphics as assigned by staff writers; maintains familiarity with current design programs; conceptualizes new graphics.
BACKSHOP/PRODUCTION
Lays out news pages under the direction of the on-duty associate managing editor.
