KLSU Executive Staff Job Descriptions

STATION MANAGER

Responsible for formulating station policy and making certain that such policies are implemented. Hires the best student available for each position. Controls the station's budget by making certain that all Executive Staff members meet all guidelines for staying with the operating budget. Works closely with all executive staff members to ensure the maximum performance for all on-air personnel. Works to maintain the highest quality product to attract the maximum number of listeners. Works with the Program Director in developing quality programming in all areas. Maintains the public file by keeping it updated and ensure that all necessary information is included in the file. Keeps up-to-date with all FCC rules and regulations and ensures that all executive staff members are briefed on a regular basis of operating policy. Works closely with the Director of Underwriting and the Underwriting Manager to ensure that all policies regarding rules of underwriting are followed closely. Delegates responsibilities to department heads as necessary and ensure they accomplish all tasks they are assigned. Conducts weekly or bi-weekly executive staff meetings to assess progress and to discuss station operations. Keeps the Student Media adminisration advised of changes in the station operations and personnel changes. The Station Manager shall cooperate with the Adviser to ensure that the Public File, mandated by the FCC, is properly maintained. A further description of the Public File appears in the KLSU Policies Appendix.

PROGRAM DIRECTOR

Responsible for maintaining the quality of the station. Must know all radio practices and music programs, FCC regulations, etc. Works with the manager in establishing programming and format policy and overseeing effective execution. Must be aware of the responsibilities of all station employees. Assists in hiring and supervision of on-air personnel. Helps develop promotions, assess research, monitors the station and the competition. Is accountable for the presentation of news, public affairs, and sports. Responsible for scheduling and evaluation of all specialty programming and DJs. Closely monitors all on-air content for obscenity, sex and drug related statements, and innuendos in announcements that violate FCC rules and regulations. Must make certain that all prizes awarded are proper and within the rules of the FCC. Works closely with the Promotions Director to make sure all contests and ticket giveaways are within the guidelines of the FCC and station policy. Maintains the EAS (Emergency Alert System) as required by the FCC. Closely supervises the Music Director to make certain that music quality and selection is current.

CHIEF ANNOUNCER

Helps Station Manager and Program Director in hiring all DJs. Must have a strong understanding of all equipment in the Control Room and be able to train all regular shift DJs for use of that equipment. Responsible for maintaining quality of all on-air personnel. Evaluates all regular-shift DJs on a regular basis and makes sure all shifts are covered in the event that a DJ cannot come to work. Stays in good contact with all DJs and acts as a liaison between DJs and executive staff. Acts as the ÒvoiceÓ of KLSU, providing voice-overs for most announcements, PSAs, IDs, etc.

NEWS DIRECTOR

Hires (in association with the Station Manager), trains and supervises station news reporters. Develops and implements news policies and procedures. Works closely with the Program Director in approving news schedules and formats. Makes certain that all news employees are properly briefed on news procedures including emergency situations. Maintains a disaster plan for the news department. Develops 2-minute newscast format clock to include local, regional, national, and weather. Maintains a quarterly issues list that is to be included in the Public File. Schedules and evaluates daily newscasts. Assign weekly packages to news reporters. Produces weekly news show (if applicable). Works with the Underwriting Department to help find funding for the News Department.

SPORTS DIRECTOR

Hires (in association with the Station Manager), trains and supervises station sports reporters. Schedules and evaluates daily sportscasts. Assigns weekly packages to sports reporters. Works closely with the Program Director and the Promotions Director to schedule any play-by-play or live remote broadcasts. Produces weekly sports show and all pre-game shows (if applicable). Work with the Underwriting Department to help find funding for the Sports Department.

MUSIC DIRECTOR

Supervises the music programming from the selection and acquisition of records to the preparation of play lists in association with the Program Director. Maintains current play list on computer (using Selector program), compiles music charts and acts as liaison with record labels and distribution companies. Download all current selections in the play list to the Automation System. Distribute station mail daily. (This position does not include responsibility for on-air personality, format changes, selection of specialty shows, schedules, without direction from the Program Director or the Station Manager).

PRODUCTION DIRECTOR

Works directly with the Program Director. Must be aware of the station's programming philosophy and objectives. Underwriting is a major part of the KLSU programming responsibility and the Production Director must be aware of how underwriting spots are prepared. Must work closely with the underwriters and be in charge of voicing or finding voices for all underwriting and promotional spots. Maintains order in the studios including cleanliness and equipment maintenance logs and informs the engineer of any equipment needs. Makes certain all required supplies are in adequate supply in cooperation with the station engineer. Responsible for overseeing the production department, which creates all in-house promotions, underwriting announcements, events calendar, etc. using production computer programs.

PROMOTIONS DIRECTOR

Works with the Program Director in planning, development, and execution of all promotional campaigns. The Program Director retains final veto power on any promotional announcement that does not meet station objectives. Arranges and schedules giveaways. Works closely with the Program Director in the arrangement and scheduling of giveaways. The Program Director retains final veto power of all giveaways. Compiles events calendar. Works closely with the Underwriting Manager and the Underwriting Staff or others as assigned in the handling of marketing issues. Over sees the Promotions Team and KLSU remotes. (See section on KLSU remotes for further policy) Maintains contact with campus and area businesses to help with promotions and marketing. Must work with the Underwriting Department. Must update the Tiger Line(578-TIGR) every week with up-to-date information.

TRAFFIC DIRECTOR

Maintains the daily Traffic Log to include all aspects of the program day; underwriting, public service announcements, news, etc. (A record must be maintained of what actually aired for billing purposes and station's records.) Responsible for scheduling and labeling announcements by computer, maintaining traffic logs and scheduling dayparts. Must work with the underwriting and production departments.

WEBMASTER

Creates and maintain KLSU Website. Must have extensive knowledge of HTML and other Web languages, graphics, Flash, etc. Must be able to update the site on a regular basis
