All Gumbo employees are expected to assist with distribution of the book, work various Gumbo-related events, attend weekly meetings and training sessions, and assist with marketing as needed.

EDITOR

Oversees production of the yearbook from planning stages through final checking of proofs from the publishing company Exercises authority over all aspects of yearbook content and production Coordinates weekly meetings to maintain staff efficiency Assists the managing, design, photo, and copy editors to encourage book consistency Coordinates all correspondence between the printer and staff in cooperation with the adviser Addresses all comments and concerns directed toward the yearbook Hires all staff members Works with the adviser and the marketing department to coordinate marketing efforts Works closely with adviser in all aspects of writing, editing, production, and planning Works with the adviser and Student Media staff to monitor the budget, sign payrolls, and determine freelance pay Keeps regular office hours during the week, approximately 13 hours total Works with adviser to produce comprehensive training sessions for students, and attends training sessions Attends advisory board meetings Is hired annually by the Media Board

MANAGING EDITOR

Assists the Editor in all day-to-day operations Selects subject ideas to be used in the upcoming book Provides guidance to all staff members Oversees the punctuality of all deadlines, stories, photos, layouts, plants, etc. Assists in hiring staff members Helps formulate headlines and captions Assists editor in making the ladder Gives copy and photo list of assignments to be covered Tries to attend all writer and photographer meetings

BUSINESS MANAGER

Oversees day-to-day business operations Works closely with the editor, managing editor, design editor, photo editor, copy editor, organizations editor, and sports editors to ensure success in the business-related aspects of the book. Oversees book distribution and mails books when necessary Writes receipts for money transactions Assists employees in getting payroll paperwork turned in Acts as a liaison between staff and facility services and other student organizations and campus departments to ensure promotions run smoothly Organizes photo opportunities and portrait days Enters Photo Opportunities picture information into the computer Acts as a liaison between staff and portrait photographer(s) Organizes staff functions Supervises distribution, photo opportunities, and other promotions Assists other staff members when needed Acts as a liaison between staff and advertising and marketing departments

COPY EDITOR

Assigns writing assignments to writers Ensures accuracy of text in book Provides literary and grammatical guidance to all staff writers Critiques and attests to the accuracy of all writers' work Coordinates with the managing editor all progressions and regressions of each writer's work Attends all writers' meetings Oversees and enforces all writers' deadlines Helps write headlines and captions Oversees day-to-day operations of writing staff

PHOTO EDITOR

Manages all photographic content in the book Distributes assignments to staff photographers and ensures their completion in a timely manner Educates photographers on use of the digital cameras, how to put their pictures into the computer, and how to use the scanners and the Photoshop program Develops a system in which proper cut-lines for pictures can easily be retrieved Serves as a photographer, gaining relevant information on subjects photographed and writing captions for all pictures taken Oversees day-to-day operations of photography staff Decides which photographs to include in the book by rating them and selecting dominants Conducts weekly meeting with photography staff and monitors each member's performance Reassigns or calls for re-shoots of photos if necessary Works closely with the design editor to ensure use of the best photos Keeps track of cameras and supplies Creates a cooperative relationship with the Reveille photo editor and photographers Oversees and enforces photographer deadlines Reviews and critiques photos submitted by photography staff and freelance photographers Edits photos in Photoshop when necessary Makes a list of all photo-worthy events and topics with the managing editor Keeps a record of photographers' assignments Helps hire photography staff

DESIGN EDITOR

Oversees day-to-day operations of all aspects of the book's creative design and designers Oversees design staff and layout artist Assists the editor and managing editor with other duties Educates the designers in proper use of the current software and design techniques Develops a theme/consistent concept of design to use throughout the book Creates graphics as needed Works closely with the editorial and design staff to determine the book's look. Shows proficient knowledge in Indesign, Photoshop, QuarkXpress and other design software Educates designers on use of the computer software if necessary Determines which section(s) each designer will be responsible for Works closely with copy editor and design editor in adding content to pages Keeps supply of design magazines and books Assists in hiring design staff

ORGANIZATIONS EDITOR

Sells book space to campus organizations Informs campus organizations that space is available and how to go about purchasing it Collects all revenue generated through the purchase of book space Collects the proper information that organizations want on their page(s) Makes sure pages look the way organizations want them to look Handles all issues that arise in regards to organizations

SPORTS EDITOR

Oversees the entire sports section of the book Checks all sports copy before it goes to the copy editor Serves as content editor of the sports section Assists designers and editors with developing the look of the sports section Responsible for obtaining press passes from the Athletic Department for games, and from other schools for appropriate high-profile games Attends games and writes stories for each sport Maintains contact with all LSU head coaches

DESIGNER (2 on staff)

Produces images depicted in the book using Indesign Coordinates with the design editor to ensure work will be consistent with design concept of the book Shows knowledge of Indesign and Photoshop Responsible for the design/layout of specific sections of the book Works closely with the copy editor and photo editor in placing content on pages Keeps a supply of design magazines and books

ORGANIZATIONS ASSISTANT

Assists the organizations editor in all his/her duties (see organizations editor job description)

STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER ( 3 on staff)

Photographs all events, persons, and objects affiliated with a particular story or concept Stays for the duration of all assigned events and collaborates with the writer(s) who has/have been assigned (an) identical event(s) in order to produce quality photographs, consistent with the focus of the story Photographs general student life cameos that capture the essence of campus life; turns in 10 to 20 photos per week Works closely with photo editor Takes photos assigned by photo editor Takes pictures of people quoted in the book Uploads photos from cameras into the server Has at least two assignments per week Takes a variety of photos

FREELANCE PHOTOGRAPHER (unlimited number, but pay has to be within freelance budget)

Has same duties as the staff photographer, but is paid by the piece Has fewer events to cover Encouraged to keep two office hours per week

FREELANCE WRITER (unlimited number, but pay has to be within freelance budget)

Conducts in-depth interviews to cover the specified subject Suggests personal story ideas to give the book a creative spin Brings up questions and comments regarding specific assignments to the copy editor and managing editor Maintains an efficient relationship with the photographer(s) to whom they are assigned in order to increase efficiency in both copy and photographs Attends all writers' meetings Attends assigned events Obtains at least six student quotes at each event Writes stories to the specified length Submits written stories no later than one week after coverage Spell-checks all stories before turning in Reads The Reveille on a daily basis to keep up on campus events Encouraged to keep two office hours per week
