The Quiz Bowl Club at Louisiana State University meets at 6PM each Wednesday in Coates Hall room 212. Practices are open to all LSU undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty and staff.
Quiz bowl is a question-and-answer game on academic topics, current events, pop culture, and general knowledge between two teams of four players. Players buzz in on and answer tossup questions for bonus questions for the entire team. It's a little like Jeopardy!, Trivial Pursuit, and Cranium. If you played quiz bowl, academic team, Academic Decathlon, or Knowledge Master Open in high school, you might like quiz bowl.
We meet to practice once a week to prepare for tournaments. Throughout the year, we travel to tournaments in Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, and elsewhere across the South.
Many tournaments allow us to send an unlimited number of teams, so there's usually no need to make the team.
Quiz Bowl has been covered a few times by the LSU Reveille: about College Bowl, other on-campus tournaments, and as organization of the week.
Don't worry about not being a good player right away. That's why we practice, and that's why you have teammates. Everybody, regardless of skill-level, is welcome to play at practice and to attend most tournaments. Plus, there are special tournaments for new players.
College questions can be more difficult than high school questions, but keep in mind that nobody knows every answer; to win a match, you and your teammates just have to know slightly more than the other team.
