What
is Gamma Beta Phi?
Gamma Beta Phi is an honorary/service student organization. All students in the
top 15% of their graduating class are invited to join. Once a student is
inducted into GBP, they are a member throughout their college career. This
includes graduate school. Students must earn both internal and external
service points each semester to remain an active member in good standing.
How
many points do I have to earn?
New members do not need to accumulate any points the semester they are
inducted. Beginning the first full semester after being inducted,
members must earn 3 internal and 4 external points each fall and spring
semester until they graduate. Extra External points can be counted towards
internal points, but internal points over 3 cannot be counted towards
external.
Members earn internal points by coming to meetings,
working on committees, attending socials, and going to state and national
conferences. Members earn external points by doing a variety of different
service projects, and by bringing in canned goods to be donated to the Baton
Rouge Food Bank. You can earn your external points by volunteering with
GBP-associated activities or other events. If you don’t get paid for it, you
are volunteering for the Baton Rouge or LSU community and you can receive
points. Points are awarded for time served. Volunteers receive 1/2 point for
each 1/2 hour served.
What
about membership dues?
New members pay a one-time fee of $65. After that members are required
to pay $10 yearly dues. The new member dues are divided. $55 is
sent to the national office of GBP, $10 goes into the operating budget of the
LSU chapter of GBP. If a member is not able to be active during a
semester, they can become inactive for one semester only of their college
career.
What
happens if I switch universities?
If you switch universities, you can transfer your membership from one
school's chapter of Gamma Beta Phi to another. Get your advisor to
notify your new school's advisor of your transfer. If that school does not
have a chapter, notify the national headquarters.
What
are the benefits of joining Gamma Beta Phi?
There are many tangible and intangible benefits of
joining Gamma Beta Phi. The minimum benefit is that as an active
member, you will be serving your community by volunteering your time.
Someone's life will be impacted by your service. Your life will also be
impacted. These benefits cannot be measured. Having GBP on your
resume tells people about your willingness to give more than what is
expected. There are many leadership opportunities in GBP as the
students run the organization
