EGSA-Hosted EVENTS

The EGSA hosts a number of social events throughout the year. The following events are held every year, though this summary is not necessarily comprehensive.

Early in the fall semester, the EGSA hosts a Welcome (Back) Party for new and returning English graduate students. Held at a current student’s home, the Welcome (Back) Party provides graduate students with an opportunity to mingle and catch up over snacks and refreshments before the stress of academic life begins. In October, the EGSA hosts a Halloween Party, and in late May we host a Crawfish Boil party and fundraiser to welcome summer. Held annually, this event brings together faculty, staff, and students to celebrate the end of the year and raise needed funds for the coming term.

Perhaps the most anticipated event is the annual EGSA Mardi Gras Conference. Every spring, the EGSA hosts a professional conference for graduate students and scholars throughout the country. Each conference is organized around a particular theme.

In addition to all of these, the EGSA Social Chairs organize and host several monthly events, including outings to restaurants, bars, theatres and dance-performances. We are also affiliated with an intramural kickball team through the BREC Parks and Recreation organization.

To raise money for the Mardi Gras Conference and other events, the EGSA holds several fundraisers each year, including the Crawfish Boil and Book Sale (among others).

EGSA-Affiliated EVENTS

The EGSA also co-hosts and sponsors numerous events annually.

The Chelsea’s Readings are organized and co-hosted by the EGSA and third-year MFA students. These readings are open to all current LSU MFA students. Held several times a year at Chelsea’s bar and restaurant off of Perkins Road, these readings are open to the public, allowing current students to showcase their work in front of a supportive audience.

The EGSA also proudly co-sponsors the New Delta Review’s annual literary and arts festival Delta Mouth. This graduate-student-run festival celebrates the work of local and regional artists. Founded in 2008, the event has brought together more than thirty artists and over two-hundred art-lovers from the Louisiana area.

LOCAL & REGIONAL EVENTS

EGSA members attend several local and regional events every year. On LSU’s campus, EGSA members are encouraged to attend the Readers & Writers series that host writers of national and international acclaim. Readings are scheduled throughout the academic year. Downtown Baton Rouge is also home to the River Writers, an evening program of reading and open-mic performances at Boudreaux & Thibodeaux’s.

In the past, EGSA members have also organized trips to the Modern Language Association (MLA) Conference to experience the epitome of English academics and enter the job market. English MFA students also organize trips to the annual Associated Writers Conference (AWP) and the Words & Music Festival in New Orleans. MFA students have presented on panels, read their works, and received awards. While not directly associated with the EGSA, student presenting work at these conferences are eligible to apply for small Travel Awards from the EGSA.
