Student Literary Magazine, delta, Hosts “Art Party” to Raise Money and Visibility
Baton Rouge, Louisiana - On April 2nd, 2009 at 7:00 pm in Foster’s Gallery in Foster Hall, the delta student literary magazine at LSU will host its second “Art Party,” a presentation of writers, musicians and visual artists. The event is designed to raise awareness of delta’s long history, to raise funds for the delta’s publication, and to celebrate student creativity on campus. Suggested donations at the door are $3-5 dollars at the door.

The evening will consist of readings from undergraduate writers and MFA students such as Kristen Sanders and New Delta Review editor Ben Lowenkron.   Music will be provided by local songwriters, including Erin Miley.  Student artists such as Elizabeth Cook and Molly Brau will have their work on display for visitors, as well. Information about the journal as well as staff applications and back issues will be available in the lobby.

“The idea,” says this year’s editor-in-chief Matthew Herron, “is build on enthusiasm created over the past year.” A poet, a painter, and a musician, Matthew sees the connections that can be made throughout the arts. “I think we really have something special here. But I don’t want it just to stop here. I want this enthusiasm I see on the staff to spill over into the larger artistic community, and show the LSU student body that they have an outlet for their creative energies.”

The delta held a similar event in the fall semester that was a great success. The fall event was held at the Old President’s House, the home of the famous Southern Review, and about 100 people attended. “If you told me before that party that close to 100 people would show up, and support what we are trying to do, I wouldn’t have believed you,” says Assistant Poetry Editor Abbas Abidi. “It really inspired us to do our best with the journal, knowing that we could get that type of support from the community despite our small size.”

The party is penultimate event for the delta student literary magazine. The delta release party, which is scheduled for the end of April, will be where the staff unveils the new issue. The party is also one part of an initiative by the current delta staff to make these events annual. The staff is currently working on a creative writing blog which would publish student work more regularly, a Wikipedia page which would highlight the rich history of the journal, and a handbook for future staff members
