Spear Phishing

We have all received e-mail from someone wanting to give you 5,000,000 US Dollars if you reply with your bank information. That type of phishing is easy to spot. However, a targeted attack called spear phishing has started to surface. This attacker first does a little research about the organization and inputs that information in the e-mail to make it look more legitimate. The attacker can quickly search www.lsu.edu and find out who the Chief Information Security Officer is and make the e-mail seem like it is from him.

Always remember that ITS will NEVER ask you for personal information or passwords. If you suspect you have received a phishing message, call or send the message to the ITS Help Desk before clicking or responding to it.
