A No Brainer for Students with Big Brains
The GeauxTeach program provides freshmen and sophomores the opportunity to pursue their undergraduate degree in: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics and earn a Secondary Teaching Certification at the same time. No additional hours are required since elective hours are used for education courses. GeauxTeach participants can still graduate in four years.
Students can earn up to $170 in scholarships for taking the one-hour Step One and Step Two courses as long as they make a "C" or better. In these courses, students have the opportunity to teach demonstration lessons in elementary and middle schools at three times each semester. By taking the test-drive approach, GeauxTeach participants will have a good idea whether the classroom is for them.
More Options, Same Degree Really is a No Brainer
Teacher certification is a plus when applying to graduate school. Graduate school admissions officials assume candidates who can explain complicated concepts to others have a better understanding of the content themselves. If you don't get into graduate school immediately, you can earn between $43,000 and $47,000 annually teaching in Baton Rouge area schools until you are admitted. In an unpredictable economy, you will have two career options and can still choose to do whatever you want.
In addition to long-term advantages the program can produce, just being in GeauxTeach is a benefit. GeauxTeach students have their own lounge in Room 218 Prescott Hall where they can work together or in teams, lounge, study, or just hang out. GeauxTeach students participate in at least two Town Hall sessions each semester that allows them to change the program and make it better. Lastly, as GeauxTeach students go through the program, they conduct their own research projects based on their experiences teaching in the classroom. What are you waiting for? GeauxTeach!
