Recreational Fishery for Red Snapper in Louisiana Waters to Close 12:01 A.M., Local Time, August 15, 2009
Posted: 5/21/09

The recreational fishery for red snapper in Louisiana waters will close at 12:01 a.m. on Aug. 15, 2009, and will remain closed until June 1, 2010.  The fishery will open as previously scheduled, at 12:01 a.m. June 1, 2009.

The decision was made by Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Secretary Robert Barham, following notification by NOAA Fisheries that the federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico will close for the recreational harvest of red snapper from 12:01 a.m. Aug. 15, 2009 until 12:01 a.m. June 1, 2010, and per a request from NOAA Fisheries to enact compatible regulations in Louisiana state waters.

Regulations for the red snapper fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico include a quota for the recreational fishery.  Based on an analysis to project 2009 red snapper recreational landings, NOAA Fisheries will close the recreational red snapper fishery in Federal waters off Louisiana at 12:01 a.m. on Aug. 15, 2009.  The Regional Administrator requested that the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enact similar action for Louisiana waters to enhance effectiveness and enforceability of regulations, and to ensure that the recreational red snapper quota is not exceeded during the 2009 fishing year.

Secretary Barham was authorized by the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission at their January, 2009 meeting to change or modify opening and closing dates for the recreational red snapper season in Louisiana waters to comply with changes or modifications in season dates in federal waters.  This action ensures that regulations in state waters will mirror regulations of NMFS for federally managed waters.
