Successful Oyster Season to Close in the Sister Lake Public Oyster Seed Reservation
Posted: 11/1/05

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Secretary Dwight Landreneau has signed a declaration of emergency under the authority of the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission that will close the 2005-06 oyster season in the Sister (Caillou) Lake Public Oyster Seed Reservation at one-half hour after sunset on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005.

Oyster harvest in the Terrbonne Parish waterbody has been strong since it opened on Oct. 22 and has provided valuable economic return to the Louisiana oyster industry. However, harvest pressure during the season in Sister Lake has significantly reduced available oyster stocks in the area, according to LDWF Marine Fisheries Division biologists. In addition, biologists noted young oyster spat in recent biological samples from Sister Lake and feel the protection of these spat is important to the long-term sustainability of the oyster reefs.
