What is LSU doing to increase safety on
campus?
For more than 20 years, the LSU campus has supported and hosted numerous
crime-prevention and educational programs. In light of recent events, LSU
is increasing the police presence on campus, upgrading illumination in current
outdoor lighting fixtures, and installing additional outdoor lighting fixtures
around campus, and improving visibility by pruning trees and shrubs. View

What kind of police presence is there on
and around the LSU campus?
LSU provides an on-site, 24-hour police station with more than 60 full-time
personnel. As a response to recent events in the Baton Rouge area, the LSU
police department has increased patrols as have other law enforcement agencies
in the area.
When is Campus Transit available?
Campus Transit is available for transportation on campus from 5:30 p.m.
to 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters.
Please call 578-5555 and a driver will be radio-dispatched to pick you up and drop you off anywhere on campus.
If you are coming in late to your dorm and do not want to park in the remote lots and walk to your dorm, come to the Public Safety Building. A campus transit driver will follow you to your lot, pick you up from your parked car, and take you to your dorm.
How do I withhold information from LSU's
online directory?
You may withhold your name, phone numbers, and addresses from being listed
on the University's online directory.
- To withhold your name from the online directory, make the following selections from your PAWS desktop: Personal Preferences -> Directory Information -> Withholding Information. Set your name withholding status to "Withhold from Internet." If you select name withholding, neither your name nor your addresses will be available through the online directory.
- To withhold a specific mailing address, make the following selections from your PAWS desktop: Personal Preferences -> Directory Information -> Mailing Address. Set the address withholding status to "Withhold from Internet." If you choose to withhold a specific address, your name will still appear in the on-line directory but that address will not appear. E-mail addresses can also be withheld.
What measures should be taken to reduce
the risk of becoming a victim of crime?
The first step in crime prevention is being ALERT to the
fact that crime can happen anywhere, at any time, and to anyone - even you.
With this fact in mind, be AWARE of your surroundings at
all times, and AVOID potentially dangerous situations.
Let your friends and family know where you'll be and what time you expect
to return. There's more safety in numbers, so stay in groups whenever possible.
Trust your instincts; if you feel uncomfortable, call the police. Personal safety
is an active responsibility that requires your attention at all times.
Never let your self-defense skills or any protective device (including pepper
spray, firearms, personal alarms, cell phones, or weapons) give you a false
sense of security. You must always remain aware of your surroundings.
What are appropriate ways to respond to
maintenance employees, delivery personnel, or police officers who unexpectedly
arrive at your door?
Do not open your door when unexpected people arrive. If you are unsure of
the person or his reason for being at your door, ask for identification
or call the appropriate parent company.
What security measures have been placed
in the residence halls and campus apartments?
The Department of Residential Life has instituted a new 24-hour secure hall
access system. Individuals are required to swipe their Tiger Card ID to
enter residence halls. This process is also required for access to specific
floors and wings. Lost or stolen cards are immediately deactivated upon
notification, and cards can be monitored to determine where they are being
used. Certain doorways are electronically monitored 24 hours a day. Other
security measures include nighttime, off-duty police officer patrols; emergency
call boxes, and nighttime security rounds conducted by residence hall staff.
Are rooms still available in residence halls?
Yes. To find out more information, contact the Department of Residential
Life at 225-578-8863 or visit the Web site at www.lsu.edu/housing.
What can students living off-campus do to make apartments and homes safer?
- Keep all doors and windows closed and locked. Use dead bolts and inspect frames of doors and windows to make sure they cannot be pried open. Repair problems immediately.
- Never leave doors open. A criminal only needs 10 seconds or less to enter an open room.
- Insist on good lighting around entrances, hallways, parking areas, courtyards, and laundry rooms. Contact your landlord or maintenance personnel for more information.
- Do not leave spare keys outside; give them to a trusted friend or relative.
- Never open your door without identifying who is on the other side. If you do not feel comfortable allowing the person into your home, keep your door closed and locked.
Should I carry a weapon?
Carrying pepper spray, mace, firearms, or any other personal weapon is a personal
decision. However, you should learn how to properly use the weapon before
carrying it with you. Never allow any weapon to give you a false sense of
security. Also, the LSU campus is a firearm-free zone; anyone found possessing
a weapon will be subject to University discipline.
