Buikstra explores the manner in which her bioarchaeological research enhances our knowledge of ancient people. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences. She discusses her bioarchaeological approach: Information from study of skeletal remains (age, sex, health status), bone chemistry (isotopes, DNA), and artifacts are examined to provide information on the lives of Andean, Maya, and other ancient peoples in the Americas.
