LSU UREC has added a new circuit room to give a double-sided approach to keeping fit.
It was easier, some thousands of years ago, to stay in shape. Chasing buffalo and woolly mammoth all day took care of cardio, while lifting boulders to protect their caves took care of strength training. But in today’s fast paced world of fast food and desk chairs, it becomes a bit harder to stay fit.
The American College of Sports Medicine recommends at least one half hour of cardio exercise five times a week as well as eight to ten strength training exercises with eight to twelve repetitions of each exercise twice a week.
The brilliance behind LSU UREC’s new circuit room located on the first floor of the UREC SRC near the equipment desk is the way it kills two birds with one stone. A circuit is a series of exercises placed around a room, and patrons do one after another. The exercises vary between weights and cardio, and the patron does each for about a minute, usually. In UREC’s circuit, one spends forty five seconds on a machine and a break to move to the next station. You can start at any station, and run through the circuit two to four times. This keeps the heart rate up while also training almost every muscle in the body.
While doing a circuit, you take care of both your cardio and your strength training requirements in one fell swoop. And it can be used by anyone.
The setup is simple: a total of ten stations are set around the room. Five of the stations are weight machines (chest press, row, overhead press, lat pull and leg press), and five of the stations are for cardio (jump rope, jumping jacks, jog in place, and two step stations).
Then music plays in time with the stations, and you can go around the room up to four times. This revolutionary new room will revitalize your workout and keep you on top of the suggested guidelines for your exercise needs.
A great way to get started with this time saving workout is through the new GroupX course, Body Circuit. This new course is an opportunity to be in a group setting and also receive help from an instructor to complete the circuit work out. The circuit room is also a great place to meet up with a friend on non-class days as extra motivation to work out.
The circuit room is an exciting and important addition that utilizes all the space UREC has in its current facility.
So while it may have been easier to stay in shape when we had to catch our own food and find our own shelter, it might be a bit more comfortable in the new UREC circuit room.
