Research Interests: My laboratory focuses on understanding how emotional and neurocognitive abnormalities contribute to social dysfunction in schizophrenia. Current projects include the following:

  • Developing sophisticated measures of key negative symptoms using computerized analysis of natural speech.
  • Clarifying how emotion abnormalities vary across the heterogeneous manifestations of schizophrenia.
  • Disentangling the relative contributions of motivational and neuropsychological factors for understanding long-term social dysfunction in schizophrenia.
  • Examining the relationship between negative symptoms and stress-reactivity in patients with schizophrenia and individuals at risk for developing the disorder.

Clinical Interests: Applying empirical supported treatments in "off label" situations, notably for individuals with pervasive mental illness, co-occurring substance abuse and personality pathology.

Hobbies: Playing jazz guitar, traveling/backpacking, crawfish boils, tailgating, catching monster Mahi.

Research Interests:Examining speech disorder across schizophrenia and schizotypy, clarifying the role that stress reactivity plays in the expression of schizophrenia symptoms, investigating the neurocognitive underpinnings of schizophrenia, analyzing the heterogeneity of schizophrenia and schizotypy.
Clinical Interests: Performing mental health assessments with recently admitted psychotic patients, individual therapy with patients witch schizophrenia and monitoring progress, utilizing measures to test adaptive and intellectual functioning, conducting psychoeducational assessments with athletes and clients.

Hobbies: Sports, movies, traveling, going to shows, writing, eating all of the food that is unique to Southern Louisiana.

Research Interests:Social cognition/social functioning in schizotypy. My thesis focuses on emotion recognition deficits in individuals with schizotypy and how these deficits relate symptoms, neurocognitive abilities, and quality of life. With another project I am examining theory of mind in psychometrically identified schizotypes, how individuals with schizotypy perceive their own social cognitive abilities, and how this relates to symptoms. I'm also working on a meta-analysis of symptoms in deficit and non deficit schizophrenia which will look at all published studies including symptom data on deficit and nondeficit groups of patients.

Clinical Interests: I currently work at Joseph Henry Tyler Mental Health Center, a community mental health facility in Lafayette, LA where I see mostly patients with both Axis II and psychotic diagnoses. I also run a day program social skills group once a week. Further clinical experience includes psychoeducational testing at the LSU Psychological Services Center on campus for student athletes and adult clients seeking accommodations mostly for ADHD or learning disabilities.

Hobbies: drinking coffee, shopping, working out, reading, 4 dogs (Jezebel, Cheyenne, Abby, Reilly)

Research Interests:Exploring the decoupling of consummatory pleasure (i.e., 'liking') and anticipatory pleasure (i.e., 'wanting') related to motivational deficits in schizophrenia by examining cognitivie and affective underpinnings of anticipatory pleasure deficits in schizophrenia and schizotypy, including negative affective interference revealed by the Emotional Stroop paradigm.

Clinical Interests: Cognitive behavioral treatment and skills training for severely mentally ill populations, and application of cognitive behavioral therapy to treatment of depressive and anxiety disorders.

Hobbies: movies, reading, and cooking

Research Interests:The cognitive and metacognitive components of emotional experience across the schizophrenia spectrum. More specifically, I am interested in investigating how the well-documented cognitive, and recently recognized metacognitive, deficits result in disordered affective experience (e.g., affective flattening, alexithymia). I am also interested in exploring the ways in which the neurocognitive and affective features of schizophrenia impact ‘real-world’ impairment (e.g., social dysfunction) and, to this end, am interested in the development and refinement of treatments aimed at cultivating illness insight and other skills thought to subserve positive functional outcomes and increased quality of life.

Hobbies: Sports (football, hockey), movies (action, comedy), reading (history, autobiographies), spending time with friends and family.

Research Interests:Broadly, I am interested in investigating the interplay between biological factors and social and emotional dysfunctions in schizophrenia, through examining:
• Psychosocial characteristics (affective traits, social support and coping styles) that influence patient symptoms and stress reactivity
• Prefrontal cortex’s (PFC) role in regulating emotions and how its functioning is altered by prolonged exposure to stress
•  Manipulating mood-dependent memory in a laboratory setting
• Better understanding the role of specific emotions (namely, social emotions) on psychological and physiological responses through EMA techniques
•   Identification of resiliency factors that lend greater behavioral flexibility
• Development of early intervention programs for socio-emotional dysfunctions in at risk populations

Clinical Interests: Utilizing novel interventions (e.g. affect labeling) that theoretically are associated with reduced emotional distress via attenuating amygdala activity. Taking an idiographic approach to patients' emotions and coping styles in order to tailor more effective treatment strategies. Stress reduction through application of cognitive behavioral therapy in clinical populations.

Hobbies: Traveling off the beaten path, learning new things, and eating good food.
