Psychological Services for Youth Clinic (PSYC)

Advancing the Science & Practice of Clinical Child & Adolescent Psychology

You’ve decided you need help figuring out why your child is having difficulties.  It’s overwhelming, though, trying to find out where to go to get the best assessments by the experts.

We’re here to help.

What types of difficulties do you assess for?

Frequently, these assessments are prompted by concerns about a child or adolescent's...

    * Poor School Performance

    * Behavior Problems

    * Emotional Difficulties

    * Suspected ADHD

    * Test-Taking Difficulties / Test Anxiety

    * Suspected Anxiety, Depression, Learning Disorders

What do you include in an assessment?

Our comprehensive assessments are individually tailored to each child or adolescent's presenting difficulty, but also regularly include...

    * An evaluation of intellectual ability (IQ)

    * An assessment of academic achievement

    * A thorough semi-structured diagnostic interview

    * A thorough assessment for any emotional difficulties

What should I expect and what do I come away with?

Typically, you can expect to come to 4 sessions for an assessment at our clinic--though we may ask for additional sessions in order to be thorough.  The first 3 sessions include an initial introduction to our clinic and its procedures with the remaining time and sessions being devoted to testing.

The fourth session is reserved to provide you with detailed feedback about the assessment findings: including providing you with...

    * an overview of findings,

    * a detailed report,

    * useful recommendations, and

    * extra time to answer your questions.

You should come away with a good understanding of your child or adolescent's mental health, functioning, and abilities.  We encourage you to ask questions and want to give you the time to do so.

I’ve heard testing is expensive; how can I afford these services?

Because of our affiliation with LSU and the Clinical Program in the Department of Psychology and because we conduct research through the clinic, we are service oriented and want to make a positive impact in our community.  Our goal is to make our services affordable—as a result, you can expect to pay significantly less than you would at most private practices in Baton Rouge (1/3 of the cost compared to some).  This is with no sacrifice in quality or professionalism.  In fact, your child or teen will be assessed by clinicians with the most up to date evidence-based training who are supervised by experts in the field (all professors in LSU’s Department of Psychology Clinical Program).
