General Information

The information given here will provide an overview
of the philosophy, policies, and procedures concerning
graduate education in this department. Please consider
these carefully before submitting your application
for graduate study.
For students considering a career in psychology and
have questions about choosing a field or career, the
American Psychological Association (APA) can provide
useful information. Please review APA’s student
brochure at http://www.apa.org/students/brochure/brochurenew.pdf
or review this APA link http://www.apa.org/topics/psychologycareer.html.
If you are interested in Counseling (including Family,
Marital, and School Counseling), please contact the
College of Education. If you are interested in Social
Work, please contact the School of Social Work. These
departments have programs designed for those fields
of work. (Please see ‘Helpful Links’ on
page 38 for contact information.)
The LSU Department of Psychology does not offer a
terminal master’s program. Students desiring
to pursue a master’s degree only should pursue
graduate study elsewhere. Students are able to enter
the program with their bachelor’s degree and
can earn a master’s along the way to the doctoral
degree or may enter the program with a master’s
degree from another institution. Students
interested in the master’s only degree program
should not apply. Please know there is no
guarantee that previous graduate level work will transfer
to our program. An evaluation of each application
will be conducted at the time of admission to determine
what work will be accepted.
The department takes education very seriously and
expects the same from our students. We do not accept
students to attend part-time and students are not
allowed to hold a full-time job while enrolled in
our program. Students are expected to devote full-time
to their studies. All course work must be completed
here in Baton Rouge, with our faculty members; no
online or correspondence courses are available.
Ninety-five percent of the students we accept have
an undergraduate degree in Psychology and some also
have master’s level courses and degrees. The
following minimum prerequisites must be completed
prior to applying to the program: Courses equivalent
to LSU’s PSYC 2000 (Introduction to Psychology),
PSYC 2011 (General Statistics) & PSYC 2017 (Research
Methods in Psychology).
For the Fall 2007, the incoming class had an average
undergraduate GPA of 3.61 and GRE of 1190 (verbal
537 & quantitative 654). The departmental minimums
for admission are a 3.0 GPA and 1000 GRE.
The Department of Psychology is dedicated to giving
each student the education needed to be a highly functioning
professional in the field of their choice. We are
very proud of our program. It attracts students from
around the world. Our graduates go on to rewarding
careers in academia, industry and private or public
practice.
The graduate program in psychology follows the mentor
model. For this reason, it is recommended that prospective
students review our Faculty web pages along with this
document. Each faculty member has additional information
regarding his/her interests and publications listed
there. This is an effective way to determine if your
goals and interests match those of our faculty and
our program, as well as to find examples of the research
conducted here at LSU.
To help students with the financial burden of graduate
school, financial aid is available in the form of
graduate assistantships. An assistantship provides
a monthly stipend as well as tuition waivers. Please
see Financial Support for more information (including
an answer to “What is an assistantship?”).
The LSU General Catalog and the Graduate Bulletin
should also be reviewed carefully for general requirements
and regulations.
