DEPARTMENT
OF PSYCHOLOGY
The Department of Psychology is located in Audubon
Hall, a modernized three-story plus basement building
on campus. The departmental office and faculty offices
are located on the second floor. Classrooms and seminar
rooms are located on the first and second floors.
Graduate offices are located on the third and first
floors as well as the basement. The building also
houses a Graduate Student computer lab, the Psi Chi
office, and the Laurence Siegel Room, where graduate
student proposals and defenses take place. Laboratory
research space for testing both individuals and groups
is available in Audubon Hall as well as other facilities
described below.
PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES CENTER
The Psychological Services Center (PSC), an on-campus
unit of the LSU Department of Psychology, offers diagnostic
and outpatient therapeutic psychological services
for adults, adolescents, and children in surrounding
communities while providing hands-on graduate student
training and conducting research in clinical and school
Psychology. The center is open to anyone in the area,
and fees for services are based on a sliding scale
considering patients' income and ability to pay. The
PSC is equipped to treat a wide variety of psychological
and emotional disorders, such as depression, anxiety,
eating disorders and substance abuse. Our services
include psychological testing and cognitive-behavioral
individual and group therapy for adults, adolescents
and children. Clients are seen by Clinical Psychology
doctoral students who are directly supervised by LSU
Psychology Department faculty, who are licensed clinical
and school psychologists. State-of-the-art training
equipment is available at the PSC including audio/visual
observation and recording in each of the therapy and
testing rooms.
Child Services
The Child Services division of the PSC offers a variety
of testing and treatment services for children between
the ages of 2 and 17. We offer comprehensive psychoeducational
testing for children, including intelligence testing,
achievement testing, testing for learning disorders,
and gifted testing. We also offer evaluations for
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and
autistic disorder, among several others. Our treatment
services include cognitive-behavioral and behavioral
therapy for many childhood disorders like ADHD, anxiety,
depression and autism. We also offer services for
children needing social skills training, and services
for parents including parent-child interaction therapy,
parent-adolescent communication training, and parent
skills training. These services are supervised by
faculty specializing in child clinical and school
Psychology.
Adult Services
Clients are scheduled for an intake evaluation session
when they call the PSC. We offer the appropriate treatment
services based on this initial information and the
symptoms clients are presently experiencing. We offer
assessment and treatment services for a range of psychological
and emotional disorders, such as depression, anxiety,
eating disorders and substance abuse. Treatment/therapy
is offered in individual and group format.

Adult Psychoeducational
& Neuropsychological Services
Psychoeducational Services are available for the purpose
of determining the presence of an attention, learning
or psychological disorder. Neuropsychological evaluations
are composed of comprehensive evaluations that address
the following areas: intelligence, academic performance,
memory, attention and concentration and psychological
functioning. Additional tests are administered if
deemed necessary. Reports include recommendations
to improve overall functioning as well as academic
accommodations if appropriate. Testing is available
to adults and children.
DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITY
SERVICES
Another source of clinical populations is the local
schools and at Pinecrest Developmental Center. Clinical
doctoral students work with autistic and mentally
retarded children and adults for both practicum and
research purposes. In a given year, approximately
100 such children and adults are likely to be seen
under the supervision of Johnny L. Matson, Ph.D.
Northshore Supports and Services Center (NSSC) is
a developmental center in southern Louisiana. Approximately
300 individuals with varying levels of mental retardation
reside at NSSC. Students under the supervision of
Dr. Gouvier have the opportunity to conduct neuropsychological
evaluations for these individuals. Dr. Matson’s
students participate in the assessment and treatment
of behavior problems exhibited by residents and in
interdisciplinary team meetings to discuss appropriateness
of diagnoses.
BATON ROUGE CLINIC
Dr. Mary Lou Kelley conducts her clinical practicum
at the Baton Rouge Clinic, the largest outpatient
clinic in Baton Rouge, LA. The BR Clinic has 15 pediatricians
and a variety of pediatric specialists including endocrinologists
and neurologists. Under Dr. Kelley’s supervision,
graduate students work collaboratively with physicians
and other health care providers in the assessment
and treatment of children’s physical, academic,
behavioral, and emotional problems. Students conduct
individual and group treatment, as well as parent
training and consultation with local schools. Commonly
treated problems include: ADHD, Major Depression,
Social Phobia and other anxiety disorders, Asperger’s
Syndrome, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Learning
Disabilities and physical problems with a behavioral
component. We are integrally involved with various
health care providers in the collaborative assessment
and treatment of children with diabetes and other
endocrine disorders and obesity. Paid interns administer
a multi-disciplinary pediatric obesity treatment program
called Kids on the Geaux.
EARL K. LONG MEMORIAL HOSPITAL
Earl K. Long Memorial Hospital (EKL), a unit of the
LSU Medical School, is a state charity hospital that
serves primarily a minority and economically disadvantaged
population. The CPTP interfaces with EKL through its
practice in the Psychology Consultation Service. The
physicians at EKL, affiliated with the LSU School
of Medicine, are engaged in medical resident education
and many also take part in the CPTP practicum experiences.
Dr. Brantley directs the Psychological
Consultation Service at EKL. Dr.
Gouvier supervises a neuropsychology practicum at
EKL, serving physicians from the Neurology and Family
Medicine Departments. EKL has provided office space
in the Family Medicine Clinic for Dr. Brantley and
in the hospital proper for Dr. Gouvier. There are
also opportunities to work in the Early Intervention
Clinic for HIV patients. The LSU HSC adult services
are provided at EKL. CPTP graduate students provide
inpatient and outpatient psychological services at
these locations.
In addition, conference rooms, group
rooms, and research rooms are available. Equipment
such as tape recorders, assessment materials, computer-assisted
biofeedback devices, and a polygraph is available.
The CPTP practicum students work with multidisciplinary
teams which address diagnostic, treatment, and prevention
questions related to the full spectrum of medical
disorders. Entailed is attendance at medical case
conferences, consultations by and for relevant physicians,
teaching conferences (case and didactic), group and
individual practicum supervision meetings, and assessment
and treatment.
BATON ROUGE MENTAL HEALTH
CLINIC & SUBSTANCE ABUSE SERVICES
Baton Rouge Mental Health Clinic & Substance Abuse
Services offer mental health services in the Baton
Rouge community through public service. Dr. Amy Copeland
supervises students at this location in conjunction
with an on-site Psychology supervisor, Bryan Gros,
Ph.D. Students assess and treat a culturally and ethnically
diverse adult population within a multidisciplinary
setting. Major affective, anxiety, and psychotic disorders,
as well as Axis II disorders are represented in this
population. Students working in Substance Abuse Services
conduct intake interviews and co-lead therapy groups
involving dual diagnosis and relapse prevention topics.
