Treatment at the Anxiety Disorders Clinic
Our therapy is primarily behavioral or cognitive-behavioral depending on the problem and what matches best to your needs. We also emphasize the use of empirically supported treatments and assessments--this means we typically use treatments that have been rigorously studied and in most cases been shown to be effective. The length of therapy will differ depending on the client and the problem; however, a benefit of cognitive-behavioral therapy and empirically supported treatments is that they are typically brief in addition to being effective.
Therapy services at the Anxiety Disorders Clinic are provided for a variety of disorders. Before beginning treatment with one of our trained clinicians, you can expect 2-3 sessions of interviewing and assessment. This detailed intake assessment allows us to properly and thoroughly diagnose any problems and plan the most appropriate treatment for you. Below are examples of just some of the difficulties we treat. Also, it is very common that children, adolescents, and adults have more than one area of anxiety.
We also regularly offer parent training / parent skills groups that offer parents some extra skills in dealing with difficult behaviors in a supportive environment with parents experiencing similar difficulties. Parents attending usually have children with a wide range of difficulties including problematic tantrums, anxiety, ADHD, intellectual disabilities, and autism.
Anxiety disorders treated by the clinic include:
Does you child or adolescent have problematic fears of things such as dogs, snakes, the dark, storms, heights, insects, or bees?
Does your child or adolescent have problematic fears of social situations, including taking tests, public speaking, or performing?
Does your child or adolescent have attacks of anxiety or fear for no identifiable reason?
Has your child or adolescent been through a traumatic experience that still bothers him or her (e.g., problems with nightmares, flashbacks, bad thoughts)?
Does your child or adolescent have trouble controlling thoughts that repeat over and over or trouble controlling the urge to do certain behaviors over and over (e.g., hand washing, checking)?
Would you describe your child or adolescent as having difficulty with many different worries? Does he or she seem to worry much of the time about a lot of different things?
Does your child or adolescent have problems being away from a loved one, parent, or safe place like home? Does he or she cry or tantrum for a long time if you leave him or her with a sitter to go out to dinner?
