What is One-Session Treatment (Φst, 1989)?

•One-Session Treatment is a unique form of massed exposure therapy for specific phobias.  Instead of multiple, weekly sessions, therapy involves only 1 three-hour session.  A recent study reported 90% of children and adolescents receiving OST have shown clinically and statistically significant improvement (Φst et al., 2001).  One-Session Treatment has also been suggested to have a "well-established" empirical status in the child treatment literature (Davis & Ollendick, 2005).  In other words, rigorous, well-designed, treatment studies by different researchers have all suggested One-Session Treatment works well.

•One-Session Treatment combines:

–

In Vivo Exposure:

Gradually coming into contact with what you are afraid of in a controlled, supportive, safe manner (nothing is ever done without discussing the step first and getting your approval)

–

–Participant Modeling :

Having the therapist demonstrate each step and gently guide you verbally and physically (for example, having the therapist show you how to pet a dog safely)

–

–Cognitive Challenges:

Confronting and challenging anxious thoughts which contribute to the fear
