Dr. Kelley
Receives NIMH Grant to Study Effects of Hurricanes on
Children
Dr. Mary Lou Kelley has been awarded
a grant of approximately $378,000 from the National
Institutes of Mental Health to study the psychological
impact of hurricanes Katrina and Rita on Louisiana youth.
More than 500,000 homes were damaged or destroyed by
the storms. As a result thousands of families were displaced.
Little is known about the effects of such a disaster
on the behavior, psychological adjustment, and educational
progress of children. Dr. Kelley’s research will
focus on these issues by comparing the characteristics
of children displaced by the storms with those of similar
children who were not displaced. The goals of the research
are to identify not only the negative psychological
consequences of the disaster, but also those factors
which lessen these negative effects. More details about
this research are available here. |

Counseling Available to Victims
of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita
The LSU Psychological Services Center
is offering services to victims of hurricanes Katrina
and Rita. We offer group sessions in grief/loss, stress
management, anxiety, and depression to the community
and students. We are also conducting individual assessment
and treatment for anxiety and trauma/stress-related
disorders for adults and children. The center is open
to anyone in the area, and fees for services are based
on a sliding scale considering patients' income and
ability to pay. Under the present circumstances of financial
hardship for so many affected by Katrina and Rita, we
are offering treatment services free of charge for those
unable to pay.
The Psychological Services Center is
located in the basement of Johnston Hall on the LSU
campus and offers assessment and treatment to adults
and children for a variety of psychological and behavioral
difficulties. Clients are seen by Clinical Psychology
doctoral students who are directly supervised by LSU
Psychology Department faculty who are licensed, clinical
psychologists. Please call (225) 578-1494 for more information.
