Information for hurricane-displaced students applying at LSU

As we approach the end of the registration period, we want to be sure that students actually have the possibility of completing the application and registration process and get into classes as soon as possible. Therefore, we are requesting that you come to LSU in person (Pleasant Hall) to submit your application.

Undergraduates

    • LSU no longer has on campus housing available for displaced students. With the influx of new residents from storm-affected areas, off campus housing in Baton Rouge and the surrounding area is very limited.
    • LSU is accepting displaced four-year college students. Students from community and two-year colleges may contact Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC) for information.
    • Registration for classes, and arrangements for meal plans, student aid, etc. All of those operations are happening together in Pleasant Hall in a temporary Registration Center. That center is crowded enough that you are unlikely to finish the process if you are starting from scratch with admissions today.
    • Tuesday through Friday, the service staff in the various campus offices will be in their regular offices from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., and the Registration Center will not be open. In the afternoons, from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., the Registration Center will resume operations in Pleasant Hall.

    Graduate Students

Graduate students who have been displaced by Hurricane Katrina should report to Room 114 David Boyd Hall beginning Tuesday, September 6, at 8 a.m. The Graduate School will assist these students in admissions processes and appropriate departmental personnel to schedule classes. Call Graduate School staff at 225-578-1641 with any questions.

    Additional Options, Particularly for Undergraduates

Here are some of the options that displaced students are considering. One or a combination of these options may fit your needs.

    • Sit out for a semester. Xavier University, for instance, has announced through its emergency website (xulaEmergency.com) that Fall 2005 classes have been scheduled to resume on January 4, 2006, and that Xavier students should plan on reporting to the same classes for which they are currently registered. Other web sites that we know about are: Loyola (www.loyno.edu), Tulane (www.tulane.edu); University of New Orleans (www.uno.edu).
    • Consider other universities in and out of the state of Louisiana. Many are making special accommodations for hurricane-displaced students. For instance, Southeastern Louisiana University (www.selu.edu) has announced plans for reopening and also for special short terms starting later in the fall. The universities that we have identified that are making special accommodations are shown here.
    • Use online or correspondence study this semester. The Louisiana Board of Regents is working with the Southern Regional Education Board to organize free online courses that could be taken through your home campus and that will start on or about October 10. Look for more information on the Board of Regents web site and at www.sreb.org and www.sloansemester.org. LSU’s Office of Independent Study is offering a range of possibilities for correspondence courses (is.lsu.edu)
