Student AchievementsLSU is one of only two universities in the nation to produce the combination of a Truman Scholar, four Goldwater Scholars and a USA Today All-USA College Academic First Team member this year. In addition, four LSU students have also been selected as Presidential Management Fellows – another nationally prestigious award. A two-semester course available in Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 will allow students to build data-recording payloads attached to scientific balloons capable of reaching near-space altitudes. LSU accounting major Trista Sanders was recently notified that she received the highest student score on the international Certified Internal Auditor Exam, which was administered in November. Trista is the 16th LSU student to achieve the highest score internationally on this exam. 191 student-athletes (40%) posted a 3.00 gpa or better for the 2006-07 Academic Year. LSU student Gena Olson was awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student scholarship to Bulgaria in Modern History by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Of May 2006 LSU graduates who responded to a six-month follow-up survey, 99% were employed, had employment offers, or were planning to attend graduate or professional school. In 2006, Sydney Nakashima, a third-year undergraduate in graphic design in LSUÕs College of Art & Design, beat out worldwide competition to win a color and design contest sponsored by the British-based Society of Dyers and Colourists, an international professional organization. LSU’s student magazine, Legacy, has been named the national winner among student magazines published more than once a year in the Society of Professional Journalists’ 2005 Mark of Excellence Awards. Sixteen students from LSU's internal auditing program have placed first in the international internal auditing examination. LSU's internal auditing program is regarded as the international leader in internal audit education. In 2005, five LSU students were presented with the President’s Volunteer Award, sponsored by the USA Freedom Corps. The five LSU recipients completed a total of 100 hours each, qualifying them for the Bronze medal. LSU has produced a number of distinguished undergraduates, including four Marshall Scholars, 24 Goldwater Scholars, 14 Rhodes Scholars, four Truman Scholars, and more than 25 Fulbright Scholars. Three LSU students have received the nationally competitive Truman Scholarship, awarded by the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation.
Honors college sophomore and biology major Nneamaka B. Agochukwu was awarded the prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship in 2005. The nationally competitive scholarship provides $7,500 per year for educational expenses to sophomores and juniors majoring in math, science, and engineering. In 2005, LSU senior Tam Nguyen of Gretna has been named one of six nationwide recipients of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, or HHMI, Gilliam Fellowship for Advanced Study. LSU School of Music senior, Lisette Oropesa, won the prestigious Metropolitan Opera competition in 2005. More than 1,500 entered the Met National CouncilÕs 51st annual auditions. The LSU A Capella Choir was invited to perform at the prestigious 2005 Los Angeles Convention of the American Choral Directors Association. Entomology Ph.D. candidate Andrew Cline received the 2004 Comstock Award from the Entomological Society of America. The Comstock Award is the highest student honor the society gives to stimulate interest in entomological studies. Carlo Vincetti Frizzo, a graduate composition student in the School of Music, won first place in the 2004 MTNA National Student Composition Competition. In recent years, LSU students have also taken first place honors in piano, flute, violin, and string quartet at MTNA competitions. Students continue to be in high demand upon graduation, averaging 3-4 job offers at graduation and remaining competitive in securing internships and residencies.
