LSU in the Eye of the Storm

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina slammed the Gulf Coast, breached New Orleans's levees, and fulfilled the dreaded Soup Bowl Theory, long-prophesized for the city. The Category 4 hurricane's legendary wrath shut down Louisiana's largest city and captivated attention around the world for weeks.

In the days following Katrina, Louisiana State University found itself in an unprecedented position. Located in Louisiana's capital of Baton Rouge, the nearest major city to New Orleans, the LSU campus became an integral resource in hurricane relief efforts. For eight days, the usual activities of the college campus were suspended to help those in need.

LSU in the Eye of the Storm is the story of how LSU coped with a natural disaster of epic proportions and how other campuses might prepare to accept the challenge during tough times as well.
