BATON ROUGE – LSU alumnus Stephen P. Herbert, chairman and CEO of USA Technologies, and wife, Julie Harris Herbert, announced last month a gift to their alma mater, establishing the fund for what will ultimately become an endowed deanship in the LSU College of Humanities & Social Sciences. The Herberts’ announcement was made Dec. 20, 2017, at the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, where Steve represented USA Technologies in the ringing of the closing bell.

The Herberts both have degrees from what is now the LSU College of Humanities & Social Sciences, and Steve is a member of the college’s Dean’s Advisory Council. USA Technologies is a seven-time LSU 100 honoree, having been included each year since the LSU 100 was introduced. The LSU 100: Fastest Growing Tiger Businesses identifies, recognizes and celebrates the 100 fastest-growing LSU-owned or LSU-led businesses in the world.

As an endowed gift, the Herberts’ donation will be invested and a percentage of the endowment’s market value will be spent each year, while the principal of the gift will continue to increase over time.

“We are deeply grateful to LSU and the College of Humanities & Social Sciences for creating a foundation that Julie and I have built our life on,” said Steve Herbert, chief executive officer, USA Technologies. “We are strong believers that a liberal arts education feeds the whole mind and best prepares students to think independently, question status quo, be an empathetic leader, understand the global landscape and build on the work done by those who have already left their mark. We are so very proud that our holistic LSU education has put us in a position to give back to the university that already has given us so much.”

“Steve and Julie’s generous, forward-thinking gift will benefit our faculty and students for generations to come,” said LSU College of Humanities & Social Sciences Dean Stacia Haynie. “Visionary leaders seek job opportunities that will offer the resources to achieve ambitious goals, and that’s exactly what our endowed deanship will do. We are grateful to the Herberts for jump-starting this effort.”

Gifts to LSU fund excellence in the areas most important to donors through education, research and outreach. Visit www.lsu.edu/giving for more information or to give to LSU.
