LSU Residential Life to Host Annual Student Move-In Day on Aug. 16
President F. King Alexander and Student Athletes to Participate
BATON ROUGE – As the fall 2017 semester is set to begin at LSU, the university’s Department of Residential Life will welcome students on Move-In Day, on Wednesday, Aug. 16, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in all on-campus residence halls and apartments.
Move-In Day provides an energetic, warm, welcoming atmosphere full of LSU pride and Tiger spirit for the anticipated 2,500 new and returning students moving to campus this day. Move-in Day arrivals will be joining the nearly 2,000 students who will already be on campus for early arrival programs like Greek recruitment, Tiger Band, academic boot camps and S.T.R.I.P.E.S.
More than 550 volunteers from the faculty and staff, members of student organizations and friends of the university will team up with the Residential Life staff for this exciting event. Volunteers will help students unload their cars, move into their residence halls or apartments and answer any questions regarding campus life that the residents may have.
Among the volunteers will be LSU President F. King Alexander, who has also invited all the parents to join him for free lunch at one of the two LSU dining facilities, The 459 on the east side of campus and The 5 on the west side. Also, around 150 student-athletes will be on hand to assist those moving into on-campus housing. Alexander will also deliver the address at the LSU Roger Hadfield Ogden Honors College welcome picnic at 11:15 a.m. in the Laville Courtyard.
As part of the LSU First Year Experience Bengal Bound schedule, there are a number of social events throughout the day to welcome residents to campus as well. Wednesday evening and throughout the first week of classes, each residential community will host a social event in the community’s common area for the residents to get to know their neighbors, adjust to campus life and meet their in-hall staff. On Move-In Day, the LSU Family Association and Office of the President will sponsor a banana split party for families, students and friends beginning at 11 a.m. in the campus dining halls. Visit the Bengal Bound website for a complete list of campus-wide opening week events.
Residential Life offers living-learning environments in eight residential colleges – the Honors House, Leadership & Service Living-Learning Community, Sophomore Gold Community and several traditional living options. LSU’s residential colleges include Agriculture, Business, Engineering, Mass Communication, Science, Human Sciences & Education, Humanities & Social Sciences and Career Discovery.
LSU residence halls are not the dorms of yesteryears, but are part of the 21st-century living-learning philosophy. More than 55 percent of all on-campus undergraduate residence halls and apartments are either new construction or have had recent major renovations. Construction, renovations and new programs continue to provide more beds and innovations for residents. And year after year student living on campus as first-year students have higher GPAs, higher graduation rates, and higher retention to second year rates than their off-campus peers.

Students with last names beginning with L-Z will check in between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m., while A-K names will check in between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Morning hours may still provide the best photo opportunities, as many of the students arrive early. The university stresses that while media are allowed to gather content outside of residence halls and in the halls’ public areas; they are not allowed to enter residence hall rooms unless invited by the occupant(s) of said rooms.
