BATON ROUGE – Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author David Finkel will give
the address at the 2014 LSU Honors College Convocation on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 7
p.m. in the LSU Student Union Royal Cotillion Ballroom. This event is free and open
to the public.
Finkel is a longtime staff writer for The Washington Post, where he won a Pulitzer
Prize in 2006 for his reporting of U.S.-funded democracy efforts in Yemen. He is the
author of “The Good Soldiers,” a non-fiction account of the several months he spent
embedded with a U.S. Army infantry battalion in Baghdad during the Second Gulf War.
Finkel is also the author of “Thank You for Your Service,” which follows the same
battalion as they return from their long deployment in Iraq and struggle to readjust
to civilian and family life. Finkel will speak on veterans’ issues and his experience
as a witness to these challenges.
Please visit the Honors College website for more information on Finkel, including
an interview with the author, http://www.honors.lsu.edu/news/the-importance-of-being-a-witness.
“Thank You for Your Service” is the 2014 Honors College Shared Read text, and is for
sale in the LSU Bookstore. The Honors College Shared Read Program assigns a selected
text as required reading for all incoming Honors College freshmen, with the goal of
introducing new students to the academic and intellectual culture of LSU Honors through
a shared reading experience.
Media wishing to attend Convocation or interview Finkel during his time in Baton Rouge are encouraged to make arrangements with the LSU Honors College or with University Relations.
