BATON ROUGE – LSU has named Dereck Rovaris Sr. as the vice provost for diversity.
Rovaris is the associate vice chancellor for academic and multicultural affairs at
the LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. He will begin as vice provost on July
1, pending approval by the LSU Board of Supervisors.
“We are pleased to have Dereck Rovaris join our leadership team as vice provost for
diversity,” said LSU President & Chancellor F. King Alexander. “Having a diverse and
inclusive campus community is one of the pillars of a great university, and we look
forward to working with Dr. Rovaris on enhancing LSU’s diversity mission.”
LSU conducted a national search for vice provost for diversity, and Jane Cassidy,
vice provost for human resources and facilities management and Roy and Margaret Gianelloni
Alumni Professor of Music, served as chair of the search committee.
“It is a pleasure to announce Dereck Rovaris as vice provost for diversity at LSU,”
said Executive Vice Chancellor & Provost Stuart Bell. “One of the goals of the Flagship
Agenda is to broaden the cultural diversity of the LSU community, and Dr. Rovaris
will play an important part in reaching that goal. We would also like to thank Kenneth
Miles for serving as interim vice provost and Jane Cassidy and the search committee
for their work through the search process.”
Rovaris earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas with a triple major
in psychology; human development and family life; and crime and delinquency studies.
He worked for three years as a financial aid counselor at Xavier University of Louisiana,
where he earned an M.A. in guidance and counseling. He later earned a Ph.D. in higher
education administration from the University of Illinois.
Rovaris returned to Xavier, serving as assistant dean of the graduate school, director
of graduate school placement and as an assistant professor with the graduate school.
He also directed two nationally recognized student enrichment programs, Xavier’s McNair
Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program and its SuperScholar/EXCEL program.
In the summer of 2006, he completed the Management Development Program at Harvard
University. In 2007, he completed a Council for Opportunities in Education professional
development tour in England and The Netherlands. Later in 2008-09, he was in Chicago
at DePaul University as a presidential fellow with the American Council on Education.
In 2010, he became associate vice chancellor for academic and multicultural affairs
at the LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans.
“It is indeed an honor and a privilege to have been selected to further serve LSU
in this new capacity,” Rovaris said. “This is a tremendous opportunity that will embrace
all the stakeholders of our institution. My vision seeks to build on the increasingly
diverse environment that is LSU. It seeks to infuse shared leadership, vision, energy,
and enthusiasm to advance the articulated mission of diversity, equity, and inclusion
at Louisiana State University.”
Rovaris has served as an educational consultant, published widely, and has been a
featured speaker on the local, national, and international level. In 2005, his first
book, “Mays and Morehouse,” was re-released. The book, which has been featured in
Ebony Magazine, tells the story of not only a phenomenal man and a great college,
but also the story of African Americans’ quest for higher education. Rovaris has traveled
extensively throughout the U.S. and in foreign nations in Europe, Africa, and in the
Caribbean. He also serves on a variety of educational and non-profit boards.
The vice provost for diversity serves as the chief diversity officer of the university
and works closely with the other vice provosts, is a member of the Chancellor’s Executive
Staff and serves as a principal advisor to the executive vice chancellor and provost
and campus community on matters involving equity, diversity and inclusion. The vice
provost for diversity serves as an institutional spokesperson on issues of diversity
and inclusion on campus and has supervisory responsibilities for the Office of Multicultural
Affairs, the Women’s Center and the African American Cultural Center.
