BATON ROUGE – The LSU School of Music’s spring season launches with a grand start with Concert Spectacular 2014, with a range of music from classics such as Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyrie” by the LSU Symphony Orchestra to music by Strauss, Respighi, Rachmaninoff and American composer Eric Whitacre in a single night.
This unique concert, set for Friday, Jan. 31, at 7:30 p.m. at the LSU Student Union Theater, brings to the stage performances by nearly every ensemble the school offers, from classical, jazz and contemporary to choirs to operatic sopranos, musical theatre and the Laptop Orchestra of Louisiana. This year, there will also be beat boxing flutes and dancers performing to live music by a double-bass ensemble.
Concert Spectacular is a full-theater experience that pushes performance into every corner of the Union Theater space, so performers pop up from the orchestra pit and the rhythm of marimbas fill the wings.
In addition to student soloists, LSU School of Music faculty will perform, including LSU Aloysia Barineau Professor of Keyboard Studies and Professor of Jazz Studies Willis Delony, along with Bill Grimes of the jazz faculty; new faculty member Sandra Moon, soprano, with the LSU Symphony Orchestra; plus Katherine Kemler, flute and Brett Dietz, percussion.
The A Cappella Choir, led by Director of Choral Studies John Dickson, will also perform, as the choir prepares for a tour of the Southeastern United States later this spring.
This year, LSU music fans can extend their enjoyment of Concert Spectacular at a private gala held prior to the concert beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the Atchafalaya Room on the second floor of the LSU Student Union. Tickets for the gala are $125 and include reserved parking, designated seating at the concert, dinner and the opportunity to participate in a silent auction of unique gifts and personal experiences. For tickets and information on Gala Spectacular, contact Mary Bayle, associate director of development for the LSU College of Music & Dramatic Arts, at 225-578-8594 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Proceeds from the concert, dinner and auction go to support the LSU School of Music scholarship fund drive and help the school continue to attract the best music students from across the state, country and abroad.
Concert Spectacular tickets are on sale now. General admission tickets are $25. To purchase tickets, call the LSU Student Union Theater Box Office at 225-578-5128, or visit www.music.lsu.edu.
