BATON ROUGE – Barnes & Noble at LSU will welcome ESPN’s Todd Blackledge at 1 p.m.
on Saturday, Sept. 21, to sign copies of his new book, “Taste of the Town: A Guided
Tour of College Football’s Best Places to Eat.”
Blackledge, who will also provide commentary on Saturday night’s Tiger Football matchup
with Auburn, recounts his favorite 20 college town and their eateries, local characters
and the college traditions in what can only be described as a guidebook and cookbook
rolled into one.
“Taste of the Town” began as a weekly segment of Blackledge’s college football telecasts. Over the first five years of the segment, Blackledge covered 60 different restaurants from around the country, but not in as much detail as he would have liked, which prompted him to compile his experiences into a book. In the book, Blackledge covers the best food in 20 college towns from Baton Rouge to Knoxville, Tuscaloosa, Clemson, Penn State, Boston and lots of places in between. Aside from a list of the best local haunts, Blackledge’s commentary pays homage to the local flavor through stories, recipes, as well as a section about his favorite traditions from each school. In addition to the college-specific chapters,
Blackledge also provides a section compiling favorite recipes of many of the coaches,
past and present. From Steve Spurrier’s “Seafood Packets” to Les Miles “Game Day Tuna
Relish” to Terry Saban’s “Ham Soup,” fans can cook it up just like their favorite
Blackledge was a three-year starting quarterback for Penn State before being drafted
by the Kansas City Chiefs in 1983. After seven NFL seasons with the Chiefs and the
Pittsburgh Steelers, he began a career as a college football analyst, working for
the Big East Television Network, ABC Sports and CBS Sports. Since 2006 he has worked
for ESPN calling Saturday Night Primetime games with Mike Patrick and currently Brad
Nessler, and launched “Taste of the Town” in 2007.
Barnes & Noble at LSU is located at 100 Raphael Semmes, on campus. Parking will be available in the campus parking garage behind the bookstore, for a fee.
