BATON ROUGE – LSU Assistant Professor of English Education Steven Bickmore has been
nationally selected as one of the 12 members to serve on the Conference on English
Education, or CEE, executive committee. Bickmore began his four-year term Nov. 15,
2012 at the National Council of Teachers of English, or NCTE, annual convention.
“I was very surprised this happened so early in my career,” said Bickmore, “It really
speaks well for the university and our education program at LSU.”
The CEE executive committee focuses on preparing students, creating policies and creating
program materials. It additionally oversees the English journal and the actions and
presentations of other committees involved with English education. Bickmore is the
only assistant professor on the executive council, all other members are associate
professor or higher.
Bickmore achieved his Ph.D. in English education at the University of Georgia and
has been with LSU for five years. He has received numerous awards throughout his career,
including The Carol Fisher Award and Milken Educator. In addition to his extensive
research projects and outstanding conference presentations, Bickmore has had 11 peer-reviewed
publications, three book chapters and two columns in the English Journal since 2008.
“I was honored and pleased to even be nominated for the position, and my experience
working with the CEE committee has been very humbling,” said Bickmore. “All the other
members I serve with are incredibly busy with their careers, but volunteer and dedicate
their time to improve English Education.”
The CEE Executive Committee attends the NCTE Annual Convention held last year in Las
Vegas, Nev., where the members guide all affairs of the conference, as well as take
part in banquets, meetings, forum events and luncheons. Bickmore has been involved
with NCTE for 30 years and his participation has continually increased. He currently
is very involved with young adult literature and has spent the last three and a half
years editing The ALAN Review with his LSU colleague, Jackie Bach, and Melanie Hundley
Bickmore will continue to serve as co-editor of The ALAN Review, a published, peer
reviewed journal devoted to young adult literature. The editors solicit people who
write reviews, recruit and receive articles, and then select which pieces are printed.
Bickmore’s primary job is communicating with the authors and reviewers. The ALAN Review
is published three times a year.
